Florida detectives opened an investigation after a Hillsboro County sheriff shot his wife and then turned on him.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office received a call Sunday at midnight from a 14-year-old who had fled a residence on Terrazzo Way in Land O 'Lakes. The child told the shippers that there was a fight and he heard a shot from inside the house.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said at a press conference Monday morning that first responders have discovered that a murder-suicide had occurred. The man was later identified as Kirk Keithley, 39, and his deceased wife, Samantha Keithley, 33.

According to Nocco, the police found the wife's body on a couch inside the house. At the top, there were three other children, unharmed. The suspect was found on the upper floor in a room separate from the children. "He had died from a self-inflicted bullet wound, it seems," Nocco said.

Officials identified the suspect as an assistant to the Hillsborough County Sheriff. It did not appear that the firearm used in the incident was a service weapon. The authorities noted that no call to the residence had occurred before Monday, but stressed that the investigation was just beginning.

According to ABC Action News, Keithley has been employed at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office for over nine years. In a statement released today, HCSO sheriff Chad Chronister confirmed that the MP had been involved in the shootings.

"Unfortunately, last night, one of our deputies was involved in a tragic event where he took the life of his wife, then his," he wrote. "I can not begin to express how discouraged I am.

"Domestic violence does not belong in our society. I ask everyone to join me and the rest of our office and pray for those innocent children who are left behind and have to pick up the pieces. It's something that is impossible to understand even for the most experienced person.

Nocco said close relatives were always informed and declined to comment on the relationship between the victims. He confirmed that the four non-injured children were aged 14 and under.

"I do not know the deputy or the individual," the sheriff told reporters. "But I can tell you that domestic violence is a horrible act that occurs in every community and that the moment when everyone goes from protecting people to the prejudice of people loses the right to officiate."

"Just pray for these children," continued Nocco, confirming that the officials were taking care of them.

"On Monday morning, there are many people who wake up ready to go to school. There are four children trying to put their lives shattered [back together], trying to understand what happened to them overnight. It's devastating what happened here this morning.

"Our children are our priority. It's devastating for this woman, absolutely horrible to have lost her life that way. But right now, we need to find ways to help these children.
