According to New York PostCristiana Brittes convinced Freitas to take a picture lying in the same bed next to her at a birthday party at the couple's house.

Investigators believe the photo was sent to Edison Brittes as a "hoax".

The footballer was then tortured, including "having his penis cut while he was still alive", before being killed and his body hidden in a dense bush in Sao Jose dos Pinhais, a city from the state of Parana, in southern Brazil.

The detectives believe that other guests also participated in the initial assault and arrested the teenage daughter of the couple, Allana.

"After the analysis of the investigation, I concluded that this homicide would never have occurred without the decisive performance of Cristiana," said prosecutor Joao Milton Salles. Globo TV.

"(She) would have suggested to the player that the joke (taking a photo next to her) would be harmless (and seen) in the circumstances in which they were taken.

"(Cristiana) knew the character of her husband and his violent personality. When the murderous acts that led to Daniel's death began, we believe that she did not try to prevent ( his) execution, "said Salles.

The family's lawyer, Cláudio Dalledone, disputed the claims, the New York Post reported.

Meanwhile, more troubling details emerged from the last minutes of Freitas' life.

Reports suggest that police found blood splatters on the walls and floor of the Brittes couple's bedroom, in the garage and in their car.

The mutilated remains of Freitas were discovered on October 27th. He had been partially beheaded with a sharp knife and his genitals had been dismembered with what was believed to be the same instrument.

The genitals of the victim were found in a tree where they were thrown away.

Freitas started his career in Cruzeiro and played for Botafogo for two years before signing for Brazilian Sao Paulo, winner of the championship six times, in 2015.

The offensive midfielder, however, was loaned to other second-tier Brazilian formations after failing to impress.

Freitas spent the first half of 2018 at Ponte Preta but failed to qualify for the club, while he played only three appearances at a loan of seven months in Coritiba in 2017.
