"The smell of a new car" may be an integral part of the buying process for UK and US buyers, but Chinese buyers are notorious for disliking this smell so much that Ford has filed a patent application for the eliminate or reduce it.

The smell of new cars is caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from plastics, leather and vinyl in new cars, as well as by adhesives, window cleaners and sealants used in the manufacturing process. .

The elimination of these VOCs – and by extension the reduction of the new car smell – can be accelerated by the heat. To take advantage of this, the Ford "Vehicle Odor Elimination" patent application describes a system that automatically measures VOC levels shortly after the purchase of a new car.

If they exceed a predetermined limit, the car will automatically find and drive to a sunny location, open its windows and run its heater and fan to help eliminate odors.

Ford hired a team of 18 odor assessors last July, with experts based in the company's Nanjing Research Center in China. The company's "golden nose" carries out 300 tests every year, assessing the pleasantness or inconvenience of all materials used in cars.

Debbie Mielewski, Ford's Material Sustainability Technical Manager, told the Detroit Free Press, "Although the" new car smell "is rooted in American culture, we know that Chinese customers do not like this scent. This patent is the result of years of research and is only an idea that we are considering for future use. "
