A few weeks ago, we posted that Ford was going to step up buy Detroit Michigan Central Station. The station is essentially similar to Buffalo's own central terminal. At the time of the announcement, Ford's intentions were still unclear, but there were signs that the terminal would become a kind of technological hub. Good news for Detroit, right?
Fast forward ten days later, and the news of Ford's plans unfolds. Dezeen published renditions of the terminal, which were written by Snøhetta. According to Dezeen, Ford plans to convert the abandoned station into a research center for autonomous vehicles, which is great news for the building, and Detroit. The entire campus will benefit from a $ 1 billion capital improvement project, which will include a healthy mix of amenities, including food and beverage services. retail, and residential facilities. Ford will focus on building urban, infrastructure, transit and smart vehicle solutions on campus, creating a dynamic destination that will become a central business hub in Detroit.
Sound familiar? Many Buffalonians have recently hoped that our own central terminal would become a central transportation hub, when research new Amtrak station. Unfortunately for East Side lawyers, the terminal was not the chosen location. Alas, we can all relate to Detroit's giant victory here. It will certainly be a game changer for the Motor City. Hopefully we can learn a few things, because Ford is proposing to turn this abandoned resort into a center of transportation innovation, and a powerful magnet for once-disenchanted Detroiters.
