CITY OF MADISON

A man from Madison City who ran in the Republican primary for the first congressional district seat was arrested on Wednesday for attempting to obtain radioactive material, the FBI announced in a statement on Wednesday.

Ryan, 30, is charged with attempting to possess radioactive material with the intention of causing death, leading to a maximum life sentence, according to the press release.

The government claims that in March and October, Ryan had attempted to buy a lethal dose of a radioactive substance via the Internet to kill someone, according to the release.

The target victim was not named, nor was the type of radioactive material.

The arrest, without incident, occurred in the 700 block of Mills Street at Black Earth, according to the release.

The FBI office in Milwaukee and its Chicago-based Evidence Response Team also executed a search warrant at Ryan's home in block 300 of Munn Road, Madison, the statement said.

"There is no danger to the public associated with these enforcement measures," the statement said.

Last summer, during an election campaign in the city of Delavan, Ryan had declared that he could not own firearms as a convict, but that he possessed a flamethrower.

Ryan was one of six candidates for the Republican nomination, which Bryan Steil of Janesville easily won.

Ryan collected 6,221 votes in the August primary election, penultimate for Brad Boivin, who withdrew his candidacy after getting a spot on the ballot.
