A former Iraqi beauty queen was murdered by two motorcyclists who opened fire as she drove her white convertible through Baghdad.

Tara Fares, 22, has 2.7 million followers on Instagram. Tattooed beauty was also a popular model.

She was hit by three bullets on Thursday as she drove her white convertible to an upscale neighborhood in the Iraqi capital.

Fares, a former Miss Baghdad and Miss Iraq finalist, lived in Erbil, a city dominated by Kurds, but spent more time in Baghdad recently. She was a Christian of Iraqi father and Lebanese mother.

Shortly after his death, one of his Instagram followers posted: "Tara Fares Chamoun is with God in a treacherous and cowardly incident. We asked God to accept it with His greatest mercy. ''

Last week, a women's rights activist, Suad al-Ali, was murdered in Basra, Iraq, shot dead on her way to her car.

Nibras al-Maamouri, head of the Iraq Women Journalists Forum, told the New York Times that the targeting of famous women in Iraq has "increased dramatically".

"This is not something new, but it is dangerous to reach the level of direct murder in front of people," she said.

"What happened to Tara Fares was odious."
