The Bush family welcomed a hairy face on Monday: a yellow Labrador retriever named Sully H.W. Buisson.
The lab will help former President George H.W. Bush in his everyday life. "More than anything else, the dog will be a wonderful companion," said Associated Press Evan Sisley.
Mr Bush, who celebrated his 94th birthday in June, has used a wheelchair since he developed a form of Parkinson's disease, reports the AP. He has also been hospitalized several times recently for various conditions.
Sully is not an ordinary dog, though. He followed a serious training. The puppy was formed by the Guide Dog Foundation and America's VetDogs, a non-profit organization that provides veterans, serving service members and first responders with a free assistance dog, according to his website. Dogs are trained to help their owners cope with various disabilities, ranging from blindness to PTSD.
Sully owes its name to Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger III, the airline pilot who was heralded as a hero after landing a plane on the Hudson in 2009, saving everyone on board. The incident was dubbed "The Miracle on the Hudson".
The dog already has an active Instagram account, @sullyhwbush, which will have daily photos of Sully's life. But, CNN notes, the account is not just for fun – it will highlight the importance of service dogs for people with disabilities.
Mr. Bush tweeted about the new arrival – and a companion former president who was there on the occasion happy:
