LOS ANGELES – A judge on Thursday sentenced "Suge" Knight, a former rap mogul, to 28 years in prison for the death of the man he had crashed in front of a Compton hamburger stand.

Knight listened without reacting as members of the deceased's family went to court, describing Terry Carter, 55, as a deeply devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Carter's daughter, Crystal, called Knight "a selfish and disgusting shame for the human species".

Knight wore a big cross dress and an orange outfit at the jail on Thursday, ending a nearly four-year-old saga in court following the fatal confrontation of 2015. He was fighting with a long-time rival by window of his van in front of the hamburger kiosk. He hit this man with his truck before hitting Carter.

Knight's numerous lawyers had claimed that he was acting in self-defense, but the co-founder of Death Row Records did not plead in any way against the intentional homicide, avoiding the holding of a trial for murder and attempt of murder.

Jail time is the lowest point in a long decline for Knight, one of the most important figures in hip-hop history. At its peak, in the mid-90s, he was publishing extremely popular records that are now considered classics of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac Shakur.

Knight was at the center of the quarrel between rappers from the East Coast and the West Coast that marked the middle of this decade. Shakur was in Knight's car when he was killed during a driving attack in Las Vegas in 1996.

He answered procedural questions but did not go to court on Thursday.

Knight was convicted of armed robbery and assault. He lost control of death row after his bankruptcy. His previous convictions make him ineligible for probation, Ronald Coen of the Los Angeles Superior Court ruled.

In January 2015, he fought with his long-time rival, Cle "Bone" Sloan, consultant on the N.W.A. biopic "Straight Outta Compton."

In a moment captured on a surveillance video, Knight returned to his truck to join Sloan, who was injured, before driving him to businessman Terry Carter, who died as a result of his injuries. injury. Knight's lawyers have stated that it was an act of self-defense.

A manslaughter would normally result in 11 years of imprisonment, but Knight's conviction and previous crimes trigger California's law on all three strikes. This doubles the sentence of manslaughter and adds another six years.

The agreement also allows Knight to be cleared in two other cases, both in 2014. He was accused of stealing a camera from a woman and sending threatening text messages to the director of "Straight Outta Compton", F. Gary Gray.
