Brian A. Joyce, the former senator who faced multiple federal charges related to his tenure, was found dead Thursday afternoon at his home in Westport, authorities said. He was 56 years old.

Gambling is not suspected and the state's medical examiner should determine the cause and manner of his death, said Gregg Miliote, spokesman for the Bristol Attorney's Office.

Joyce's wife regained her body early Thursday afternoon, Miliote said. Joyce was involved in a car accident on Wednesday night, but it was unclear whether this was related to her death, which is still under investigation.

Joyce, a Democrat, was indicted in December 2017 in a 102 – page indictment which accused him of collecting about a million dollars in bribes and money laundering by his cabinet and transforming its public service into a criminal enterprise.

The lawyers said they expected to be tried by May 2019, according to a recent court decision.

"We send our condolences to Mr. Joyce's family and friends as they mourn his passing," US Attorney Andrew E. Lelling said in a statement. "We will have no more comments during this difficult period."

Senate Speaker Karen E. Spilka said Thursday that she had just learned of Joyce's death.

"While the authorities are processing the appropriate investigations, my thoughts are with her family," she said in a statement.

Once the Senate Deputy Senate Leader, Joyce moved from Milton to Westport.
