Former Massachusetts senator Brian Joyce was found dead at his home on Thursday.

The district attorney's office said that a criminal act was not suspected.

Joyce's wife found him at home in Westport, a spokesman for the Bristol County office told Attoney. The medical examiner has taken custody of the body and an autopsy will be performed.

Joyce was arrested late last year and charged with more than 100 counts of political corruption, racketeering, money laundering, wire and mail fraud and misappropriation of federal funds.

Senate Speaker Karen Spilka issued a statement on Twitter on Thursday afternoon.

Joyce was a Democrat who held the position of Deputy Leader. He served nine terms in the legislature from 1998 to 2017 and left the Senate after not being re-elected in 2016 in the midst of the federal inquiry. He moved from Westport, Massachusetts, after his political career.

"We send our condolences to Mr. Joyce's family and friends as they mourn his passing," said US lawyer Andrew E. Lelling in a statement. "We will have no more comments during this difficult period."

The elements of the Associated Press have been used in this report.
