Former striker Roland Griffin of Iona, a former West Aurora player who had previously played at Illinois State, said he was sacked from the basketball team after an altercation with an assistant coach.
Griffin told Stadium that he had repeatedly hit assistant coach Garfield Johns in self-defense last Monday after a verbal argument in the locker room.
Griffin Stadium reports met with head coach Tim Cluess, who then told him that his school would be under a disciplinary suspension that would prohibit campus activities until the end of the year. at the end of May 2020.
The stadium report stated that Johns had been hospitalized briefly for a head injury before being released.
The college said in a statement that it "took all health and safety issues seriously" but did not comment on student discipline issues or student information.
The 6-foot-7 Griffin averaged 11.2 points per game as a junior at Iona, finishing third on the team. He scored 29 points in the Gaels' 83-71 win over Fairfield in the Metro Atlantic final and 21 points in Duke's loss to the team's NCAA 89-67.
Griffin played at Illinois State as a rookie, averaging 5.9 points per game. In February of this season, he was suspended for an indefinite period for breaking the rules of the team. Two weeks later, he left the team for what the Redbirds called "Undisclosed Medical Reasons."
He spent his second year at Midland College in Texas before being transferred to Iona.
At West Aurora, Griffin led the Blackhawks to the Class 4A qualifying round in 2015. He scored 31 points in a Cup victory over Central Hinsdale, but was suspended for a 1-point loss in supersection against Bolingbrook.
