"We lost a real hero," said police chief Joel Fitzgerald. "Someone who has dedicated more than one service tour to this big city … our whole department is in pain now."
Hull was the first officer in his department to die in service since 2006.

The three men entered the bar with guns fired, the authorities said, and Hull and other officers waited outside and faced them as they fled the facility and tried to jump in an SUV. .
Police said that one of the men, Dacion Steptoe, had shot Hull, hitting him in the head. Another officer fired back, killing Steptoe, according to the WFAA.
Two other men, Samuel Mayfield and Timothy Huff, have been identified by the authorities as accomplices of Steptoe.
The trio is believed to have committed up to 17 armed robberies of most Latin bars, in which three people were shot dead, police said.
Officials say that the night Hull was shot, the three men returned to the same bar that they had stolen in July. The security video of the interior of the bar has been broadcast during the summer.
