Abilene Fernandez was asleep when her mother heard a loud slam on their door early Friday.
She thought it was her daughter, but found her in the shower. Drowsy and confused, she slowly opened the door and lit a flashlight on the man who was hiding against his wall.
"He really had those big eyes," she said. "He just looked at me and he had that terrified look on his face. It was at that moment that I shouted … I pulled back and I closed the door.
She heard the man jump on his father-in-law's truck and over his locked mesh fence.
Moments before the start of the blows, Fort Worth police officer Garrett Hull had just been hit in the head while he was trying to arrest suspects in a robbery. armed hand, said Chief Joel Fitzgerald.
The robbery took place shortly after midnight at the Los Vaqueros Sports Bar, in the 400 block of W. Biddison Street, police said.
Sgt. Chris Britt said that undercover agents were conducting surveillance activities on men suspected of having committed a series of armed robberies that hit bars belonging to Hispanics since the summer.
Fernandez saw the damage caused by these suspects.
"We do not have peace here anymore," she said. "The kids could not play outside anymore. We must all look at each other in the back.
Some men were stolen from a porch late at night a few weeks ago, Fernandez said. And there have been other flights that the neighborhood thinks related to these suspects.
She said they were looking for cars that do not belong and call the police when they see something suspicious. In talking with a Star-Telegram reporter, another neighbor asked the reporter to confirm that the car parked in the street was his because they had never seen it parked there before.
"We are ahead," Fernandez said.
In July, the police launched a call for help to obtain information on the three suspects. At that time, more than 20 customers had been stolen.
A client from El Corral was shot in the face. A customer of Rincon Bohemio was kicked to the head and lost consciousness, the police said.
The hold-up chain started on June 24th. The list of bars affected by thieves includes Rincon Bohemio, 4000 Hemphill Street, June 24; La Escondida Bar, 215 W. Morningside Drive, 1 July; El Corral Bar, 317 Collard Street, July 13; and El Tamaulipas Bar, 3616 N. Main St., July 14th.
Witnesses described the suspects as thin black men, aged 20 to 30, with distinctive tattoos.
When Hull and other officers were monitoring Los Vaqueros, the suspects stole the bar, Britt said.
"Our agents confronted these suspects a short distance away at 3500 May Street … The suspects were trying to get into a vehicle. They could not do it, so they kept running, "Britt said.
The 3500 block of May Street was still blocked by police and cassettes at 11:30 am on Friday. At approximately 11:00 am, two vehicles were towed – a GMC Sirerra brown truck and a Ford blue SUV. The rear window and the rear window of the SUV appeared to be fired.
Britt said that when the suspects began to run away, several uniformed police officers joined the prosecution.
"At least one of these suspects made a kind of weapon and started firing," Britt said. "The officers fought back. This suspect died on the scene.
Hull was hit and other agents started to provide help. He was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in critical condition, Fitzgerald said.
Police said all the suspects had been arrested.
Fernandez said after seeing the police light up across the street, she alerted the agents to the man who broke her in.
"I told them that someone had hit my house and if they could, please, check the back of our yards, under our cars, in the trees, where to see if this nobody was hiding it, "she said. "I have six children inside the house, so I panicked a lot. They did it.
The suspects have not been identified by the police.
Fernandez said she was sad and sorry about Hull.
"He was protecting our community," she said.
