A co-host of "Fox & Friends" claimed that he had unwittingly donated to Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign when he had purchased for about $ 600 of "Make America" themed Christmas decorations Great Again "two years ago.
Brian Kilmeade told The Hill on Tuesday that he had bought the Christmas ornaments, inspired by the red MAGA hats, on the official Trump campaign website two years ago.
"I did not know it would be considered a gift," Kilmeade told The Hill. "I'm looking for something cool and unique for Christmas for adults after this historic election."
Below you'll find a screenshot of the Trump campaign's Christmas ornament, featured on the official Trump campaign website. It is unclear if this is the exact model purchased by Kilmeade, or if it cost $ 45 at the time.
Kilmeade – one of three presenters of Trump's favorite morning show – said he had just been looking for Trump campaign gifts online and that he had not realized that it was found on the official website of the campaign.
He said the ornaments were "a bit expensive in retrospect, but that was all". He did not specify how much the ornament had cost, nor how much he had bought.
When making a purchase on the Trump campaign website, users are informed at checkout that they must enter their profession because it is "required by federal law for political contributions".
Business Insider contacted the campaign website to find out if the same review was available in 2016.
Users also have the opportunity to make an additional donation.
Documents filed by the Federal Election Commission show that Kilmeade donated $ 601.71 to Donald J. Trump for the position of President, Inc. The contribution was processed on January 20, 2017, the day of the inauguration of Trump.
"Fox & Friends" is an extremely popular show with Trump. He often tweets about it and phoned to talk. A former White House official said Trump even organized his meetings around segments of the series.
Kilmeade said Fox News had alerted him about this donation this weekend.
"Even if I was not in this sector, I would never make contributions to people, especially after an election," he said.
"I have no interest in giving a campaign on anything."
Fox News said in a statement to The Hill that he was not preventing staff from buying holiday ornaments.
