Fox News presenter Shepard Smith on Monday refuted the claims of President Donald Trump and his own network about the risks of a so-called "caravan" of migrants heading for the US border.

"There is no invasion. Nobody comes to get you. There's nothing to be scared of.

"Tomorrow, the migrants, according to Fox News, are in over two months, if none of them really comes here," Smith told radio on Monday. "But tomorrow is a week before the mid-term elections, which explains all that."

On Monday, Trump tweeted the migrants from Central America to "go home," adding, "It's an invasion of our country and our military is waiting for you!"

Critics criticized Trump for stirring up anti-immigrant rhetoric and fueling fear before the next mid-term elections. This message was amplified by Fox News commentators, who described the caravan as an immediate threat to the United States.

In fact, migrants are still about 1,000 miles from the US border. They flee much of the violence and poverty in their home country and seek asylum in the United States.

On Monday, the US military announced the dispatch of about 5,000 troops to the border.

Smith accused Trump and other politicians of using the caravan to "sow fear" in a cynical ploy before the elections. He noted that a similar rhetoric about another caravan of migrants had dissipated earlier this year.

"When they did this to us, they all pissed us off in April, remember?" Smith said. "The result was 14 arrests. We are America, we can face it. But as I said, a week before the elections.
