Host Jamie Foxx kicked off the 2018 BET Awards by celebrating the huge success of "Black Panther", naming the records that the film broke and even pulling Michael B Jordan on stage.
"We do not need a president right now because we have our king," said Foxx about T & C Challa Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. "(Director) Ryan Coogler gave us our king."
Foxx entered the arena with a stuffed black panther – with a gold chain around his neck – which he stretched to Jordan. He then shot the star of "Creed" on stage to recite a memorable line of "Black Panther".
"Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped ships, because they knew that death was better than bondage," said Jordan to the audience, including Childish Gambino, LL Cool and DJ Khaled.
Foxx has joined rapper Jay Rock on stage for an energetic performance at the top of the show. J. Cole, with singer Daniel Caesar, was on top when they came on stage for a performance.
DJ Khaled, who was the first nominee with six, won first prize for the best collaboration of the night – for "Wild Thoughts" with Rihanna and Bryson Tiller.
"God is the greatest, I want to thank God on another level, he blessed me with my greatest blessing – Asahd Khaled," said DJ Khaled, who was holding his son on his hip on stage.
He also used his speech to highlight young people.
"You are all leaders and you are all kings and queens – the future," he said.
Later in the show, legendary singer Anita Baker – who dominated the R & B charts from the early '80s to the mid' 90s with sweet songs like "Sweet Love" and "Give Me the Best" – will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Cardi B, who is pregnant and will not attend the show, is nominated twice for the first prize – video of the year – with the songs "Bodak Yellow" and "Finesse Remix" with Bruno Mars. She is likely to win the best female hip-hop artist, a prize Remy Ma won last year, ending Minaj's seven-game winning streak in the category.
Drake is also a double nominee for the video of the year with "God's Plan" and "Walk It Talk It" with Migos. Other nominees are "Humble" by Kendrick Lamar and "Wild Thoughts" by DJ Khaled.
SZA, who will participate in the show, is nominated for four awards, including the best new artist and the best female R & B / pop artist, which sets her against Beyonce, Rihanna, H.E.R. and Kehlani.
