Framingham resident attends Advanced Space Academy – Framingham Source

HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA – Katharine Leaver from Framingham attended Advanced Space Academy in the United States Space and Rocket Center, home of Space Camp®, Space Camp® Robotics ™, Aviation Challenge® and NASA Marshall Space Official center of flight center.

The weeklong educational program promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), while training students and activities and practical assignments based on teamwork, the leadership and problem solving.

This program is specifically designed for trainees who are particularly interested in space exploration.

Leaver spent the week training with a team that piloted a simulation space mission to the international Space Station (ISS). Once aboard the ISS, the crew participated in experiments and completed an extra-vehicular activity (EVA) or an outing in space. Leaver and her crew returned to earth in time to graduate.

Space Camp operates year-round in Huntsville, Alabama, and uses astronaut training techniques to engage trainees in real-world applications of STEM topics. Students sleep in premises designed to look like the ISS and train in simulators such as those used by NASA.

More than 750,000 trainees graduated Space Camp since its inception in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1982, particularly in Europe. Space Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti and NASA Astronauts Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, Kate Rubins and Serena Auñón, who recently joined Space Station. Children and teachers from all 50 states and 69 international sites attended a Space Camp® program.
