Two buildings collapsed Monday in Marseille, southern France, local authorities reported.

The collapse, which projected clouds of dust into the air, occurred on a street near the city's famous Old Port. Fire departments said that two people had been "slightly injured" but that they had been treated.

Local fire services said on Twitter that some 40 firefighters were on the scene, adding that rescuers were cleaning the rubble with sniffer dogs in search of people likely to be trapped.

The prefecture of the region has posted on Twitter images showing a pile of rubble and beams as well as a thick layer of dust covering the cars on the street. She had initially reported that a building had collapsed and had advised residents to stay away from the area.

Firefighters said that a third building was also threatening to collapse, reported the news site 20Minutes. Each building would contain 12 apartments.

Sabine Bernasconi, mayor of Marseille district in which the collapse occurred, said that one of the buildings was in poor condition and under evacuation order, but it did not occur. could not exclude that squatters may have lived there.
