OAKLAND, Calif. – Los Angeles Angels receiver Francisco Arcia started the day behind the plate, made a brief stint on the mound and finished in the major league records.
Arcia threw two innings of relief and hit her sixth home run in the Angels' 21-3 loss to Oakland Athletics on Thursday.
By doing this, Arcia became the first player to catch, throw and perform in the same game in the modern era (since 1900), according to Elias Sports Bureau.
Informed by the Angels of his feat, Arcia said, "I'm pretty happy, I guess."
Arcia, 29, was already in the lineup after scoring 10 points in her first two games after being recalled by the miners on July 26.
Arcia also became the first player in the Angels position to throw since 1993, when he shot a goal-scoring A-goal on Aug. 11, but has not done much since.
That changed on Thursday when the angels were two digits late. Director Mike Scioscia did not need to tax his pen, so he turned to Arcia.
Arcia needed only five shots to remove the first two batters before allowing three consecutive hits, including consecutive homecoming returns. Nick Martini and Chad Pinder.
"Just BP fastballs," said Arcia when asked what his repertoire included. "I played with my catcher, that's all."
Mark Canha eliminated Arcia with a draw in the eighth end, but Dustin Fowler scored an unfinished double-game.
Arcia then stopped Chris Hatcher in the ninth.
"It's a nice little note for Frankie, it's safe," Scioscia said.
Arcia has split his time with Jose Briceno since the Angels traded Martin Maldonado against the Houston Astros and Rene Rivera was defeated by the Atlanta Braves.
"I'm just playing hard," said Arcia. "Where they put me, I will play hard."
