Although the street is reopened, the Salesforce Transit Center itself will remain closed for the foreseeable future, a spokesman for TJPA said today. Transit operators will continue to provide bus service from the Transbay temporary terminal on Howard and Main Streets.
The reopening of Fremont Street is expected to help reduce congestion in the downtown area after the September 25 shutdown.
The discovery of the first crack in a steel beam in the ceiling of the third-level bus bridge located on the east side of the Salesforce Transit Center, near Fremont Street, resulted in the temporary closure of the building and Fremont Street located below. The First Street side of the Salesforce Transit Center will also be strengthened as a proactive measure. Current testing and monitoring shows no crack on the first street steel beams, which have the same basic design as the beams on the Fremont Street side, TJPA said in today's release.
Teams will work on shoring work on the side of the first street between 9:00 pm and 5:00 am to minimize the impact of traffic; no First Street night road closure is planned.
