NEW YORK CITY – David Wright, a native of Hampton Roads, left Citi Field on Saturday for the last time.
Wright's career ended in the Met against the Miami Marlins in front of a crowd of New Yorkers, leaving a long legacy after being part of the organization since 2001.
A graduate of Hickory High, Mets' third base player had been limited to just 75 games in the past three seasons due to neck, shoulder and back surgeries. Until this weekend, Wright had not played in a Major League game since May 27, 2016.
In 13 seasons, Wright has accumulated 242 career circuits and 970 career points. Wright played only 38 games in 2015 and only 37 in 16 years. According to Spotrac, the Mets owe him $ 47 million from 2018 to 2020. He is the all-time leader of the Mets in shots, doubles, marches, points scored and points produced.
Wright was recalled to New York on Tuesday before the Mets game with the Atlanta Braves. The 35-year-old was on the team's list.
