FWC said in its latest update on the state of the Red Tide that it was not clear at the moment how tropical storm Gordon was affecting the Red Tide and its movement in the Tampa Bay area. They continue to work to assess the impact of the storm.
At the same time, high concentrations of red tide were observed in or off the hills of Hillsborough, Charlotte, Lee and Collier, but not in Pinellas, Manatee or Sarasota counties.
Compared to last week, FWC reported that several sites in Sarasota and Collier counties showed a decrease in cell concentrations.
FWC claims that persistent surface currents over the past few days have probably played a role in transporting K. brevis cells to the northwest.
Cases of fish mortalities have been reported at several locations in Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota and Lee Counties, and at a location in Collier County. Respiratory irritation was reported last week in Manatee, Sarasota and Lee counties.
