The longest episode of Game of Thrones to date – Season 8, Episode 3 – aired Sunday, marking the biggest battle scene to date. A key element of this was the role the dragons played (or did not play), and you can read all the details of what happened with Rhaegal below. If you've ever watched, do not miss our eggs and Easter references from Episode 3 – they were quite numerous and, given the problems faced by some people with regards to the level of darkness and of visibility, you may have missed something.
The third episode of the last season of Game of Thrones, The Long Night, finally brought the shock we had been waiting for since the beginning of the first episode of the series. The army of the night king's dead crosses the wall and the forces of the living, led by Daenerys, Jon Snow and the two Dany dragons, decide to do everything possible to try to stop them once and for all during the Battle of Winterfell.
It was a pitched battle that caused a lot of casualties – check out our full summary of all those who have failed to pass, and our analysis to find out if The Long Night is successful in its conflict resolution goals with the king of the night. But once the dust settled, there were still some unanswered questions. Ghost, the werewolf of Jon Snow, disappeared in the first charge, leaving everyone online asking what happened to him (here's the answer). And then there was Rhaegal, the dragon ridden by Jon, who fell in the middle of the battle and was never seen again. So what happened to him?
Although Rhaegal is rather grueling in the middle of the battle, we know for sure that he survived the Battle of Winterfell. This is because it appears, albeit very briefly, in the HBO teaser for episode 4.
Rhaegal and Drogon, the Daenerys dragon rides, were a mighty force in the battle until a blizzard spoiled any visibility, and the dragons struggled to help the fighters on the ground. When the king of the night arrived in the Viserion of the undead, the situation became even more eventful.
Viserion and Rhaegal literally crashed against each other in the blizzard, the Wight dragon trying to cook Rhaegal 's rider while they were beating one another. ;other. The Night King took the opportunity to try to attack Rhaegal and put him to the ground for good, just as he did with Viserion during the episode of season 7 Beyond the Wall. But Rhaegal finally won the fight, tearing a piece of Viserion's face, and the night king and the evil dragon both fell to the Earth. But Rhaegal's injuries were rather serious and he also fell to the ground – he crashed, throwing Jon off his back, and that's the last time we saw the dragon.
So the question that remains is now what is Rhaegal's condition in the future. Like other Daenerys forces, Rhaegal was beaten during the battle with the king of the night, Viserion making a huge cut in his chest. It also looks like he has tears in his eyes in the teaser (though it's hard to tell the dragons from any distance). It is very likely that it will not return 100% for some time, which could challenge its role in the upcoming battle for the Iron Throne at King's Landing.
Daenerys has already lost much of her military potential, pushing her to defeat Cersei Lannister, and dragons have always been her best asset. We have seen it do a lot with one dragon, but a weakened Rhaegal (and maybe Drogon) will certainly be a setback.
