Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher passionately debate Tottenham’s transfer policy

Gary Neville acclaimed Daniel Levy as ‘the best operator in football’ in an absorbing debate about Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer policy with fellow pundit Jamie Carragher.

Spurs failed to sign a single player during the summer transfer window, and have spent just £29 million net on arrivals since manager Mauricio Pochettino’s appointment in 2014.

The delays and spiralling costs of building a new stadium have further restricted Tottenham’s spending power, but Pochettino has guided them to three consecutive top-three in spite of these constraints.

“We hear people talk regularly about not liking clubs who spend more than they should, but Tottenham run the club very well. Daniel Levy is the best operator in football,” Neville told Monday Night Football, after Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Spurs.

He added of Tottenham’s chairman: “Levy doesn’t get messed around by agents, he doesn’t get messed around by managers, he doesn’t get messed around by players, he has them all on long-term contracts and very rarely loses them on a free transfer, as some clubs have done in the last few years, namely Arsenal and Liverpool.

“But he runs the club very well under a budget, you can’t be critical of that.”
