General Motors will ask the federal government on Friday to make the sale of electric cars mandatory across the country.

The automaker is proposing to Washington to adopt a version of California's existing regulations that require a number of cars sold by the manufacturer not to produce emissions.

Car manufacturers who exceed their quota in California are able to sell credits to other low-performing automakers, while plug-in hybrids are given partial credit, based on their pure electric range.

GM's proposal begins with a 7% mandate in 2021 that will increase to 25% by 2030, provided that battery manufacturing costs reach $ 70 per kilowatt-hour, about one-third of their current cost.

The program would expire once the 25% target would be reached – by the time GM calculated that there would be 7 million zero emission cars on the road – against a little over a million today. – and that the electric vehicle market would probably be in a difficult situation. position to stay.

Until September, GM had sold a total of 25,000 refillable cars in 2018 and more than 110,000 Tesla vehicles.
