General Motors has introduced two electric bike models that will go on sale in 2019 on Friday.
The bikes, a foldable and a compact, are designed for urban travel. Electric assistance will help commuters get to work on the bike without accumulating sweat or giving them the feeling of having to shower.
"We have combined electrification know-how, design talent and automotive quality testing with leading bike industry experts to create our e-bikes," said Hannah Parish, General Manager. Motors Urban Mobility Solutions.
E-bikes are part of GM's goals to reduce and eventually eliminate carbon emissions.
The Detroit-based manufacturer has been manufacturing and selling vehicles for over 100 years, but most GM vehicles run on gasoline. In recent years, the company has intensified its efforts to produce electric vehicles and seek the assistance of the government that will help them in its efforts. The company has announced its intention to present the US government with a national program for zero emission vehicles that would put 7 million long-range electric vehicles on the road and eliminate 375 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030.
GM is rolling out its zero emission programs as consumers adopt alternatives to car ownership, such as carpooling and carpooling. GM announced a loss of $ 3.9 billion in 2017.
The company says that e-bikes are "innovative, integrated and connected", but do not give more details, such as prices.
But the company is trying to spark interest in these products by asking the public to help name electric bikes. An online suggestion box is open, with a prize of $ 10,000 for the winner of the nomination contest and $ 1,000 each for the nine finalists.
