A rush of precipitation continues in Massachusetts this morning and although cold temperatures will persist in the western and central parts of the state during daily commutes on Monday morning, most of the state will see rain or rain freezing rather than snow.
"The snow, where it occurs, should be confined to most areas, with the exception of a few centimeters in parts of the Worcester and Berkshire East Hills," National Weather Service forecasters wrote Monday morning.
Forecasters warned commuters to plan slippery roads in western and central Massachusetts, including parts of Middlesex and Worcester counties.
Temperatures in eastern Massachusetts were already above zero at 5 o'clock, limiting rainfall to rain in Boston and the south shore.
The precipitation line will gradually decrease around noon, but a strong low pressure wave will likely cause snow accumulation in the area Monday evening on Tuesday evening, forecasters said.
Monday night will be cloudy and it will probably rain in the night in the Boston area, mainly after midnight, forecasters said.
"The rain could turn into snow Tuesday morning before ending Tuesday afternoon," said the weather service. "Some movements are possible, especially to the north and west of I-95."
A winter weather notice will be in effect from 22h. Monday night until 5 pm Tuesday for parts of northern central Massachusetts and the Berkshires, including Greenfield, Fitchburg and Ayer.
"Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected," said the meteorological service. "Plan for slippery road conditions. Dangerous conditions could affect morning or evening trips.
In Boston, forecasters were expecting rain on Tuesday morning, followed by afternoon snowfall. An inch of snow is expected in the city.
There is also a possibility of snow Tuesday night, and forecasters have announced a new snow accumulation of less than half an inch possible in Boston.
Wednesday will be mostly sunny, with a high of nearly 38, and then temperatures will drop around 10 degrees in the Boston area overnight.
Forecasters say they are ready to face a "near-record cold" and "freezing cold, while the Arctic air mass is overrunning the region," forecasters said.
So be sure to pack your bags for the holidays because Thursday will be really cold.
Thanksgiving day will be sunny but cold, with peaks close to 20 and minimums falling to around 10 degrees at night in Boston.
