WASHINGTON – Former First Lady Michelle Obama said Thursday that ex-President George W. Bush had become his "partner in crime" after years spent together at official events.

"President Bush and I are forever seats because of the protocol – that's how we sit on all official functions," Obama told NBC's "Today" show. "So, he's my partner in crime at every major thing where all the elders come together."

"I love him to death," Obama added. "He's a wonderful man, he's a funny man."

Obama expressed his affection for Bush after being questioned about the moment when he handed him a drop of cough at the funeral of the late Iranian Republican Senator John McCain on September 1st. The moment, which happened at Washington's National Cathedral, became viral on social media.

Bush gave a cough to his wife, Laura, when Obama leaned over and asked if she could have one too. She said that she had not realized that anyone was watching the "simple gesture".

"And I'll add that it was old cough drops," Obama said, describing them as being in an official White House box. "And I said to myself," How long have you had it? "They said," A long time. We have a lot. ""

Obama, a Democrat, said his friendship with Bush, a Republican, defies the labels.

"The party does not separate us," she said. "Color, sex, that kind of thing does not separate us."
