A day earlier, the Smith Center had organized a women's international basketball exhibition between the United States and Japan.

George Washington's associate athletics director, Brian Sereno, said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports that the dashboard had fallen when "a winch broke."

"During the regular maintenance of our display board today, it was lowered to about 8-10 above the ground," Sereno said. "A winch broke, and one side of the display board fell to the ground.
