For the third time this cycle, Georgia is at 16 verbal commitments for the 2019 class. Five-star running back John Emery Jr. (Destrehan, La./Destrehan) announced on Thursday that he has elected to reopen his recruitment, becoming the fourth player to remove his name from the Bulldogs’ pledge class this month, along with five-star wide receiver Jadon Haselwood (Ellenwood, Ga./Cedar Grove), four-star cornerback Jalen Perry (Dacula, Ga./Dacula), and four-star linebacker JD Bertrand (Roswell, Ga./Blessed Trinity).
“This is one of the toughest decisions I have made in my life so far,” Emery said, via his personal Twitter account. “I know it will only get tougher. My next move can determine a lot with my future during and after football. I want to first give thanks to the Bulldog coaching staff. Coach Smart and Coach McGee, thank you for recruiting me and giving me tips after some of my games, and getting to know me and my family on a personal level. This recruiting process has taught me patience; even though something seems right, and in fact it may be right, it’s always better to be careful and time is a subset of being careful. With that being said, I am here to announce that at this time I am de-committing from the GA Bulldogs. God Bless.”
Emery is the sixth recruit to de-commit from Georgia for this cycle, joining Bertrand, Haselwood, Perry, four-star defensive tackle Rashad Cheney (Ellenwood, Ga./Cedar Grove), and three-star offensive tackle Luke Griffin (Chatsworth, Ga./North Murray). The loss of Emery puts Georgia at 16 commitments for the cycle and drops the Bulldogs from third to fifth in the 247Sports Team Class Rankings. Considered the nation’s No. 22 overall prospect, No. 2 running back, and No. 3 recruit in Louisiana by the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, Emery, who holds offers from 15 other programs, originally committed to Georgia on July 29, 2018. Other programs, like LSU, have since continued to show interest in the 5-foot-11, 206-pound tailback.
The Bulldogs now have 16 verbal commitments, a group that includes three 5-star prospects in Nolan Smith (Savannah, Ga./IMG Academy), Travon Walker (Thomaston, Ga./Upson-Lee), and Dominick Blaylock(Marietta, Ga./Walton). Georgia, which intends to sign close to a full class this cycle, now has room for up to nine more prospects. Before landing Emery, Georgia was also in the mix for five-star Trey Sanders (Port St. Joe, Fla./IMG Academy), four-star Noah Cain (Denton, Texas/IMG Academy), four-star running back and LSU commitment Tyrion Davis (Baton Rouge, La./Southern University Lab School), four-star Kenny McIntosh (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./University School), and four-star Nay’Quan Wright (Opa Locka, Fla./Miami Carol City). Dell McGee was in South Florida last Friday to see Wright play, checking in on others during the day.
Another tailback to watch is three-star Jamious Griffin (Rome, Ga./Rome), who has 169 carries for 1,850 yards and 26 touchdowns, averaging 10.9 yards per carry this season after rushing for 1,276 yards as a junior, 1,443 rushing yards as a sophomore, and 866 yards as a freshman, with 92 rushing touchdowns with several games left to play.
Georgia has rotated junior Elijah Holyfield and sophomore D’Andre Swift, with junior Brian Herrien and freshman James Cook also getting snaps. Freshman Zamir White is out for the season after suffering a torn ACL to the opposite knee of the one he had a similar injury last October.

In the 2018 recruiting cycle, Georgia had eight recruits de-commit, although one, five-star edge rusher Adam Anderson, would later re-commit to the Bulldogs. Georgia would replace Max Wray with Cade Mays, Elijah Moore with Tommy Bush, Caleb Tannor with Anderson, Aaron Brule with Otis Reese, Jaevon Becton with Brenton Cox, Rachad Wildgoose Jr. with Tyson Campbell, and Donovan Georges with Channing Tindall.
