Georgia Governor's Run – Stacey Abrams, Brian Kemp: Live Election Results, Polls, Last Vote Count – Live Updates

What to watch for

The big question in Georgia is whether a progressive Democrat like Abrams can win in a constant Republican state in recent decades. Georgia elected a Democratic governor for the last time in 1998 and has not elected a US Democratic senator since 1996.

Abrams, a graduate of Yale Law School, has earned a reputation as a pragmatic negotiator during her tenure at the Statehouse. But she presents herself as a tried-and-tested Liberal, favoring gun control and the right to abortion, which could prove difficult to sell in much of Georgia.

Kemp, meanwhile, is Republican in Trump's mold. "I have a big truck," he boasted during an advertising campaign during the GOP's primary, "just in case I should gather some illegals and bring them home myself" .

In previous years, this contrast in messaging could have given Kemp a decisive advantage. But the explosive growth of the Atlanta metropolitan area in recent years and Trump's low approval rates among white university-educated students point to a state that is quickly becoming competitive again.
