The University of Georgia sacked first baseman Adam Sasser from his baseball team after apparently shouting racial slurs at one of the Bulldogs' quarterbacks on Saturday.

The director of sports at the university, Greg McGarity, announced the dismissal of Sasser in a statement Wednesday, a few days after two students said they had surprised the racial reaction of insults to senior quarterback Justin Fields. No additional details were provided immediately.

McGarity said in a previous statement that an investigation into the incident had started late Monday, after a third student reported rude comments on a Facebook page called Overheard at UGA.

"Although we are limited in what we can say about the incident at this point, I want to emphasize that we do not tolerate discriminatory behavior," said McGarity. "The University's Office for Equal Opportunities examines in detail all reported violations of our non-discrimination and anti-harassment policy to ensure an appropriate response."

Sasser reportedly shouted the "n-word" to Fields, according to two of the three women who complained about the incident.

"I did not expect this result, but I'm glad something has been done," said Africa Junior Buggs at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I only hope that this will serve as a warning to others that your actions have consequences, no matter who you are."

Klarissa Gulebian, who published the details of the incident on Facebook, said she was "shocked" to hear about Sasser's dismissal from the team.

"I was not sure what was going to happen," she told the newspaper. "At least, I was expecting a suspension, but I am happy that steps have been taken."

Sasser, meanwhile, has apologized in a statement posted on Twitter and stated that he had spoken to Fields, saying that they were "on good terms" after this discussion.

"First of all, I want to apologize for my actions during the Saturday football match," Sasser said. "I fully understand why my actions were offensive and I am deeply sorry for the pain and distress caused to anyone."
