COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm knew the Bulldogs, ranked third, had been designed to last after their arrival at last season's game. He thinks the rest of the country has discovered Saturday.
Fromm had 194 yards passing and one touchdown, Georgia's last three combos scored touchdowns and the Bulldogs knocked down Carolina's 41st position against South Carolina on Saturday.
"We were not going anywhere," said Fromm. "We have worked too hard to stay where we are."
That was evident at Williams-Brice Stadium, where Georgia (2-0, 1-0 SEC) used the dominant offensive and suffocating defense to win its fourth victory over the Gamecocks (1-1, 0-1).
"We thought that if we could run the ball and beat it early, it would be devastating," coach Kirby Smart said.
Fromm was 15 and 18 behind, including a 34-yard TD pass to Mecole Hardman. Andre Swift, Elijah Holyfield and Brian Herrien seemed just as effective as NFL riders Nick Chubb and Sony Michel did a year ago to lead Georgia to the college football tournament.
Holyfield led the way with 76 yards and a 5-yard score. Swift had a 17-yard run against BC, and Herrien broke through 15 yards in the third quarter while Georgia climbed 31 points. It was at this point that many people in the crowd of 83,140 began to disappoint – a familiar ritual against the Bulldogs.
Cornerback Deandre Baker set the defense early in the game with an interception out of the ball in the first minute that led to a quick touch, albeit unconventional. Baker dropped the ball before crossing the goal line, but teammate Juwan Taylor took the ball and took the final step to complete the 56-yard play.
Baker did not initially realize he was short. "I was hoping someone from my team was picking it up," he said with a smile.
From there, the game of defense and racing in Georgia took over, as they did so often against South Carolina. The Bulldogs beat South Carolina 271 yards passing at 54.
When South Carolina had the chance to hang after the interception of Rashad Fenton in Georgian territory, the Bulldogs gave only one race on the next four plays. They took over after Bentley's disability in fourth position.
"It was huge," Smart said. "We are still talking about setting fire to the defense after a turnover."
Georgia rarely relaxes. South Carolina made 70 yards on the Bulldogs 5 in the fourth quarter before interception of J.R. Reed's safety zone.
South Carolina quarterback Jake Bentley had 269 passing yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp was disappointed, especially in the third quarter when Georgia beat South Carolina 21-0.
"We have a lot of football in front of us, the big thing you do, we have to be technical, starting with me," said Muschamp.
THE TAKEAWAY
Georgia: With its first important test over, Georgia is looking back to the SEC East class and a likely participant in the championship game. The Bulldogs' toughest league games are against opponents from the West – at LSU on October 13 and against Auburn on November 11.
South Carolina: The Gamecocks were hoping that a strong demonstration against Georgia would prove that they belonged to the SEC summit. South Carolina will try to regroup against Marshall before resuming SEC play.
IMPLICATIONS OF POLL
Georgia has strengthened its position in polls by easily eliminating a ranked opponent. South Carolina's first visit to polls since September 2014 will be short.
MAIN INJURY
South Carolina defensive end D.J. Wonnum did not play because of an ankle injury suffered against Coastal Carolina last week. Wonnum was sweaty and had his leg raised on a scooter during warm-ups before the match.

Here are some things to watch for during the second week of the Southeast Conference football season:
GAME OF THE WEEK: No. 3 Georgia at No. 24 in South Carolina. It's an early season game between two teams that are among the favorites to win the SEC's East Division. Georgia has dominated the series in recent seasons, winning the last three games by at least 14 points. The Bulldogs have turned around a 10-point favorite for Saturday's game, but the Gamecocks will appreciate the home advantage at Williams-Brice Stadium.
MATCH OF THE WEEK: Texas A & M by reversing Trayveon Williams' defensive line against Clemson. Williams ran for 240 yards and three touchdowns in a defeat of the season in the West West. He will face a much tougher challenge on Saturday against a Clemson defensive line that includes three All-America selections in the Associated Press preseason. Christian Wilkins and Clelin Ferrell were selected as first team, while Dexter Lawrence was second.
NUMBER OF GAMES: No. 25 Florida, the 31 consecutive wins over Kentucky represent the fourth-longest run in an unbroken series of NCAA history. Notre Dame won 43 consecutive victories against the Navy from 1964 to 2006, Nebraska beat Kansas 36 times in a row between 1969 and 2004 and Oklahoma won 32 straight wins against Kansas State from 1937 to 1968.. .. The SEC has seven teams in the Top 25 this week, its highest total since October 16, 2016. The teams ranked by the SEC are: Alabama No. 1, Georgia No. 3, Auburn No.7, No. 11 LSU 18 State of Mississippi, 24 South Carolina and 25 Florida. … The SEC scored 13-1 in the first week of the season. The only SEC team to lose was Tennessee, who lost 40-14 to West Virginia 14th. … Scottie Phillips, the 204-yard defender against Texas Tech, was the highest total ever recorded by an Ole Miss offensive midfielder. It was the tenth time that an offensive halfback Ole Miss has gained more than 200 yards in a game.
UPSET WATCH: No. 18 Mississippi State at Kansas State. The Bulldogs have a 91/2-point lead over Kansas State, which makes sense considering Mississippi State's 63-6 victory over Stephen F. Austin and Kansas State's 27-24 over-win over South Dakota. Still, it's a big gap in a Power Five game and Mississippi quarterback Nick Fitzgerald will play his first game of the season after missing the first game due to a suspension.
Player to watch: Kentucky RB Benny Snell Jr: Kentucky's hopes of ending its series of 31 consecutive losses in its annual Florida series are likely to depend on the performance of its best player. Snell ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-20 victory over Michigan after running over 1,000 yards in his first two years in Kentucky. Florida limited Snell to 59 yards in 14 races last season.
