The Giants signed free agent wide receiver Corey Coleman to the practice squad on Thursday, after placing Cody Latimer on injured reserve.
News of Coleman’s signing was first reported by The Athletic.
Heading into Week 7, the Giants wide receiving corps is decimated by injuries with Latimer out until at least Week 15, and Russell Shepard dealing with a neck injury.
Coleman has yet to appear in a game this season, after being released by the Cleveland Browns back during training camp and spending time on the Buffalo Bills practice squad and six days on the New England Patriots’ 53-man roster, prior to joining the Giants’ practice squad.
A highly touted prospect, and former first-round pick, out of Baylor, Coleman’s career hasn’t quite gotten back on track ever since breaking his hand during his rookie season in 2016.
Here are five things to know about the Giants’ newest practice squad receiver:
1) Former first-round pick
Coleman was a heralded wide receiver prospect coming out of Baylor, and was chosen by the Cleveland Browns with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
A three-year collegiate starter, Coleman averaged 17.4 yards per reception with 3,009 yards and 33 touchdowns.
2) Messy divorce from the Cleveland Browns
During this past summer, Coleman plummeted down the Browns’ depth chart, and was captured by the HBO Hard Knocks cameras imploring head coach Hue Jackson to either play him, or trade him.
Jackson and the Browns responded on Aug. 5, by trading him to the Buffalo Bills for a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Coleman’s tenure with the Bills was brief, as he was released as the team trimmed its roster to 53 players on Sept. 1.
