NEW YORK –
An exchange of gifts that is circulating again on social networks requires users to send a gift worth $ 10 or more to their "secret sister", promising up to 36 gifts. This seems like a great way to spread the holiday cheer, but it is not. It's a scam.

"Does anyone want to participate in this fun?" a version of the article reads. "You must buy a gift worth at least $ 10 and send it to your secret sister. (Hello, Amazon!) You will then receive 6-36 gifts in return."

The message, obtained by CBS News, encouraged users to comment "I entered" for more information. but this could be disappointing when participants will receive very little or no gifts in return for their efforts.

The scam, which became popular in late 2015, is a pyramid scheme posing as a holiday pleasure.

The US Postal Inspection Service explained the scam in a message published in 2015 on Facebook.

What appears to be a fun way to give gifts during the holidays can leave participants at least $ 10 – and give scammers the address of your home, which will cause more problems afterwards.
