David Johnson will return to the field in the first week against the Washington Redskins, but he will not have a new deal.
The Arizona Cardinals and the running back have signed contracts, but the two sides are unlikely to reach an agreement before Sunday's first match, NFL network insider Ian Rapoport said Friday.
The door remains open for an agreement to be made during the season, added Rapoport.
We heard Johnson's last comment regarding his contract status in mid-August, when the running back said he was "encouraged" by the talks. Alas, he will enter the season arguing the final year of his rookie contract, which is expected to pay $ 1.88 million in 2018. The Cardinals could use the franchise label in 2019 on Johnson if a long-term deal # 39 is not concluded.
Johnson hoped to take advantage of Todd Gurley's $ 60 million four-year win with the Los Angeles Rams, which helped bring the market back to zero. The back of the Cards ignored the minicamp earlier in the off season in the hope of getting a new deal, but participated in the training camp and in the pre-season.
Last month, Johnson told Jim Trotter of NFL Network that he felt somewhat forgotten in the discussion about young runners waiting for a big payday.
"I really have the impression that people seem to have forgotten me.You hear people talking about Todd Gurley, Zeke Elliott and Lev Bell – and they are very nice. But you notice that you do not Do not hear your name or that people are not talking about you. "
After a wrist injury that relegated him to a single game last season, Johnson hopes to remind the Cardinals that he is still the player who nearly fought the 1,000 and 1,000 season in 2016.
"Certainly a better # 31 than in 2016," said Johnson, referring to his jersey number. "You can expect a guy who will be able to do this stuff and more."
General Manager Steve Keim said Friday at 98.7 FM Arizona Sports that he was not waiting for Johnson to prove that he could stay healthy.
"Not at all," said Keim via the team's official website. "I am convinced that David is the guy we want to keep as a vital member of this team."
