GM recalls more than 1M trucks, SUVs because of the risk of loss of power steering

General Motors is recalling more than one million trucks and SUVs in the United States due to the risk of loss of power steering of these vehicles.

In total, the Cadillac Escalade 2015, the GMC Sierra 1500 and the Yukon, as well as the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban and Tahoe are included in the recall. According to the National Road Safety Administration, the total number of vehicles in the United States is 1,015,918.

This is happening a little over a year after the Detroit – based automaker recalled about 800,000 Chevrolet Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra model year 2014 trucks for the same reason. The fault concerns the power steering, in which these affected vehicles could lose the power steering and then be over-compensated by the return of EPS assistance.

"These vehicles are likely to experience a temporary loss of EPS assistance, followed by a sudden return of EPS assistance, especially during low-speed cornering maneuvers," reports GM in NHTSA documents. "The loss and sudden return of EPS assistance usually occurs within a second and is caused by an electrical / software problem.

"If EPS assistance is lost and suddenly returned, the driver may have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speed, which would increase the chances of collision."

As with any potential warning that drivers may be looking for, the automaker says the driver information center could alert the reader to a power steering problem. The affected vehicles could also experience loss of radio, stabilization, door lock, air conditioning or cruise control.

GM has not yet notified drivers, but dealers will update the electric power steering module software for free in the affected vehicles.
