FLORENCE, N.J. – Authorities said on Thursday that they had opened a criminal investigation and executed a search warrant at a man's home. The couple's lawyer, Ernest Badway, did not answer the phone calls for an answer. He earlier refused to comment.
This is the latest news in a case that made international headlines and which, at first, seemed to illustrate the kindness of strangers, but has turned into a dispute over how and who has spent the day. 39, money donated online by 14,000 people.
The couple is being sued by Johnny Bobbitt, who received McClure gas late one night in 2017, while she was stranded in Philadelphia. She created a GoFundMe page for him, but the relationship has deteriorated.
Bobbitt's lawyer says that he was told that all the money was gone. It is unclear what has happened to him, but McClure and Amico have denied any wrongdoing.
On Wednesday, Superior Court Judge Paula Dow ordered the couple to testify under oath and deliver documents as part of the case. Bobbitt, whose attorney states that he is participating in an addiction treatment program, will also be filed on Monday.
Neither the couple nor Bobbitt were in court on Wednesday.
Badway, the couple's lawyer, told the court this week that her clients were intending to claim their right not to testify, but Dow said she needed to hear them in person .
Chris Fallon, Bobbitt's lawyer, also did not immediately respond on Thursday to a request for comment.
The story first led to appearances for Bobbitt and McClure on shows like Good Morning America "as well as a BBC interview.
But a dispute over money has appeared since then.
Mr. Amico stated that Bobbitt had spent $ 25,000 in less than two weeks last year on drugs, in addition to paying overdue bills and sending money back. his family.
The couple also bought a camper from Bobbitt with some of the money and parked it on land owned by the McClure family in New Jersey. But Bobbitt became homeless after Amico told him in June that he had to leave the property.
At a recent appearance on NBC's "Megyn Kelly Today" show, D'Amico told Kelly that there remained more than $ 150,000 in donations. In court on Wednesday, Badway said Bobbitt had received $ 200,000, but Bobbitt's lawyer said he received about $ 75,000, including the camper and a 1999 Ford Ranger.
