Earlier this year, Greene faced an internal and external outcry over a controversial Defense Ministry contract – dubbed Project Maven – to analyze and interpret drone videos via AI technology. The news of the deal has led several thousand employees to sign a petition asking Pichai to keep Google out of the "war market" while dozens of others resigned in protest.
Taking over from Greene, Kurian faces a major cultural challenge that has always been a source of tension at Google. It is a consumer-driven, engineering-driven company with some of the highest technology profit margins and has never been able to fully grasp the realities of business selling.
No company is more closely associated with the company than Oracle, but recruiting thousands of engineers and salespeople is a daunting task. A year ago, Greene announced that Diane Bryant, formerly head of Intel's data center operations and potential CEO of the chip maker, was joining Google Cloud as its chief operations officer. Seven months later, she was gone.
Transition from Google Cloud after three great years
Hello everyone,
When I joined Google full time to use Cloud in December 2015, I told my family and friends that it would be for two years. Now, after three incredibly challenging and productive years, it is time to return to the passions I have had for a long time around mentoring and education.
Mentoring will include investments in founding CEOs with engineering or science backgrounds and will assist them. I wish to encourage every female engineer and scientist to think about starting their own business someday. The world will be better with more women among the founding CEOs.
Work in the field of education will focus on initiatives that combine technology with in-person education to create high-quality, low-cost, scalable and personalized education. When Google bought the bebop, I engaged all my recipes in philanthropy, it is high time to put this money to work!
Thomas Kurian, a renowned technologist and executive, will join Google Cloud on November 26 and assume the lead role of Google Cloud early in 2019. Sundar, Urs and I have all interviewed Thomas. We think that it will do an extraordinary job. move to Google Cloud at the next level. Thomas has 22 years of experience at Oracle; most recently, he was president of product development.
I will continue as CEO until January, working with Thomas to ensure a smooth transition. I will remain director of the board of the Alphabet.
The Google Cloud team has accomplished incredible things over the last three years and I am proud to have participated in this transformation work. Google Cloud, which had only two major customers and a large number of startups, was chosen to allow Fortune 1000 companies to bet their future on Google Cloud, which we should accept as a huge compliment and a huge responsibility.
Together, we built a solid business by integrating Commercial, Marketing, Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Google Apps / G Suite services into what is now Google Cloud.
We have set up a training and professional services organization and partner organizations. We reorganized customer engineering and added a team of experts within the CTO office. We have also developed a way to help companies adopt the AI through our advanced solutions lab. We have set up a complete marketing organization that, in just three years, has received many awards, including the Cannes Lions Awards. We have established our vertical business sector, a sector in which we have achieved strong growth in the areas of health, financial services, retail, gaming and media, business and consumer products. energy and manufacturing, as well as transportation. We have set up Cloud ML and Cloud IoT groups. We acquired Apigee, Kaggle, qwiklabs and several large start-ups. Our technology development has been recognized across the industry and Google Cloud is distinguished by security, AI, modernization of open hybrid applications, G Suite and many other areas. We are now recognized as one of the leaders of the 11 Quarter Magic Gartner and Forrester Waves.
But here's what I'm most proud of: the phenomenal team assembled and the way we put together all our functions to ensure customer-oriented business preparation and management. When this trip started, some people were able to say that Google had advanced technology, but they were not sure that customers would rely on Google as a business partner. At our recent Google Cloud Next event in San Francisco, we had more than 23,000 attendees – a 10-fold increase from 2016. With nearly 300 customers explaining how Google Cloud helps them transform their businesses, nobody did not question our seriousness or our abilities.
The cloud space is early and there is a huge opportunity ahead. I loved working with everyone. I am particularly grateful to all our clients, partners and employees for the outstanding three years of working with you.
-Diane
