Google fires 48 employees for sexual harassment

(Reuters) – Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google Inc., said Thursday that the company had fired 48 employees for sexual harassment over the past two years.

Pichai sent an email to Google employees in response to an article in The New York Times earlier in the day.

The report says the search engine giant has protected three senior executives from allegations of sexual misconduct by offering them payouts.

The e-mail, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, indicates that of the 48 licensees, 13 were senior executives or held more senior positions.

However, Pichai said that none of these employees received an exit package.

The e-mail, which was also signed by Google's vice president of people operations, Eileen Naughton, says that company employees can use internal tools to anonymously report instances of inappropriate behavior.

He also said that Google had updated its policy by requiring all senior vice presidents and vice-presidents to disclose any relationship with a colleague, regardless of hierarchy or the presence of a conflict.

"We are committed to making Google a place where you can feel safe doing the best you can and where the consequences for anyone behaving inappropriately have far-reaching consequences," says the message.
