DeVaul had been working for the company for more than seven years and was working on moonshot projects such as the Loon Internet connectivity balloon. Prior to working at Google, DeVaul worked at Apple as an experienced prototype scientist.
According to the New York Times report, DeVaul would have proposed to a woman to apply to work in the company. Google did not offer her the job and she reported the incident to her HR department two years later. The company told The New York Times that it had taken "appropriate corrective action" after receiving the complaint.
In a statement to the Times, DeVaul said he was sorry for "misjudgment".
CNN was not immediately able to join DeVaul on Tuesday night.
Following the Times report, Google CEO Sundar Pichai sent an e-mail to employees highlighting the company's commitment to "creating a safe and inclusive workplace." The letter did not mention any of the accused leaders.
