Gordon Hayward says he's managing a back pain that's getting worse and worse as the Boston Celtics striker prepares for the opening match of the regular season the next week.
Hayward, who did not play in Saturday's pre-season final against the Cleveland Cavaliers, told reporters Wednesday that his back was bothering him in the past, but that he was generally recovering quickly.
This time the pain persisted, said Hayward.
"That's what made me feel that I needed to remind him a bit," said Hayward. "In the past, it bothered me, but still calmed me and went well with treatments and tricks, but this time it got worse, especially after playing."
Hayward is waiting to be grounded Tuesday against the Philadelphia 76ers, but he understands that it will take time for him to be in top form again after missing all but one of the 2017-18 season games.
"I discovered that it would be a process because I had not played for so long," said Hayward. "The rest of my body has to readjust to play."
Hayward fractured his shin in his left leg and broke his ankle on October 17, 2017 and missed the rest of the season. Additional surgery in May to remove a plate and screws slowed its preparation during the off season.
Last week, he told ESPN's Zach Lowe that this delay was affecting his impressions of the start of the season.
"Physically, I feel pretty good," Hayward told Lowe. "But I still do not feel comfortable on the floor – it's one thing to be physically able to do it all – it's another one to be a basketball player." : timing and rhythms When you've been playing for a long time, just know, but not after taking a huge break and getting back to a new system. "
Hayward played in three of the Celtics' four pre-season games, averaging 19.7 minutes before attending the final.
