WEBVTT >> LIVE, WITH OUR PARTNERS, THIS IS A SPECIAL COMMITMENT 2018, THE DEBATE OF THE GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS. NOW, MODERATORS THIS EVENING. MARIA: GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO THE FINAL DEBATE FOR GOVERNOR RAC. BOB: ELECTION DAY TUESDAY AND TWO CANDIDATES ARE IN ORDER OF THE BULLETIN THE GOVERNOR REPUBLICAN CHARLIE BAKER, IN PROGRESS OF EXECUTION. AND CHALLENGER, THE DEMOCRATIC JAY GONZALEZ. We appreciate your being here tonight. MARIA: A PANEL OF THREE VETERAN JOURNALISTS ASK QUESTIONS. ADRIAN WALKER, THE COLONIST, INDICATES THE "BOSTON GLOBE." FROM WCVB "S ON THE RECORD", JANET WU. AND WBUR'S SENIOR POLITICAL RAPPORTEUR, ANTHONY BROOKS SPANISH SECONDARY AUDIO IS SO AVAILABLE WITH OVERNIGHT BROADCAST. CANDIDATES HAVE ONE MINUTE TO RESPOND TO QUESTIONS AND 30 SECONDS FOR REBUTTS. BOB: We start now. A COIN OF CURRENCY DECIDES THE ORDER OF OPENING AND CLOSING. Mr. GONZALEZ, YOU ARE FIRST AND YOU HAVE A MINUTE. Mr. Gonzalez I am running for Governor because I take care of people and I want to make a difference in the lives of people. AND I BELIEVE IN OUR POTENTIAL TO DO IT. I AM THE SON OF A YOUNG IMMIGRANT OF SPAIN IN A MOTHER WHO DEPOSITS THE COLLEGE TO TAKE CARE OF ME. They have overcome extraordinary challenges by working hard, believing and supporting each other along the way. What I learned from my parents are our values. AMERICAN VALUES. WE HAVE ALWAYS BELIEVED AT THE LITTLE GUY. We always believed that we could overcome any challenge if we put our minds to it and worked for it. AND THIS IS CERTAINLY TRUE HERE IN THE MASSACHUSETTS OR WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A PROGRESSIVE LEADER. I want us to be who we are. TOWARDS HIGH LEVELS, TAKING THE GREAT CHALLENGE IS RETAINING FAMILIES OF WORK IN THE STATE. DEFEND FOR EACH PERSON AND DO THE MASSACHUSETTS AGAIN. I HAVE AN AMBITIOUS AGENDA TO MAKE EXACTLY THAT. I will make a difference for working families in the state and I will stand against Donald Trump's hate agenda. GOV. BAKER GOOD EVENING AND LEAVE ME BEGINNING THANKING THE CONSORTIUM OF THE MEDIA AND I WANT TO THANK THE VISUAL AUDIENCE AND THE PEOPLE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS BY GIVING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE. THIS HAS BEEN THE OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFE. MASSACHUSETTS IS GOING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. Our economy is thriving, our schools are large and our collaborative approach to leadership that we have created has solved problems and made things possible in the community across the Commonwealth. That's why so many mayors and other local officials endorse our re-election. WE ALSO OPPOSED THE OPENING OF YOUR EPIDEMI INVESTED OFFSHORE, AND FOR CHANGE CLIMA, AND BY MAKING NATIONAL MODELS CREATED AS MANY CREATED. WE HAVE INVESTED IN A MINISTRY OF FAMILIES BRAIDED AND FOUND PERMANENT HOUSING FOR 15,000 FAMILIES SINCE WE HAVE TOO OFFICE, THE GOVERNMENT THAT CAN APPROVE IS DONE FOR THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT. WE HAVE A LOT TO DO ON OPIOIDS, TRANSPORTATION HOUSING, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, YOU SAY NAME THAT I BELIEVE THAT OUR APPROACH TO WORKING TOGETHER CAN DO TRUE. >> Let's start. JANET: FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY, THE CRIMINAL WAS USED IN REFERENCE TO THE GAS EXPLOSIONS. THE OFFICE OF THE PROSECUTOR OF THE UNITED STATES HAS STARTED AN INQUIRY. MORE THAN 5000 CLIENTS SUFFERED WITHOUT HEAT AND HOT WATER TONIGHT. MR GONZAL, YOU HAVE BEEN CRITICISM FROM APACE, BUT IT IS EASY TO CRITICIZE. WHAT YOU SHOULD GIVE US TO THE EXAMPLES OF CONCRETE WHAT THOUGH HE DID DO AT THE PLACE. M. GONZALEZ: THE FIRST OF ALL IS A SIN. I WAS IN LAWRENCE THREE TIMES THE LAST WEEK. THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY IT ARE NOT ASSUME OF GAS SUPPLY SERVICE IN THEIR HOUSING, LOST COMPANIES AND THEIR ENTERPRISE IN DANGER, IT IS A REAL TRAGEDY. THIS SHOULD NEVER COME TO BEGIN. WE MUST HAVE HAD A STRONGER MONITORING OF OUR GAS COMPANIES. I WOULD LIKE TO ENGAGE MUCH MORE PEOPLE TO MONITOR OUR GAS COMPANIES AND GAS INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE STATE TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE. THE FACT THAT IT IS NOW DELAYED FOR AN ADDITIONAL MONTH IS A TRUE PROBLEM. There will be people who can not be in their homes during the cold weather and this is not ok. I think we need a lot more people, obviously preparing all those houses, and we should have been everywhere in the gas company. IF YOU GO, WE HAVE TRUST THE GAS COMPANY AND I THINK THE GOVERNOR NEEDS TO TAKE CHARGE AND AWARENESS OF IT AND MANAGE IT TO BE ADDRESSED AS EMERGENCY C & # 39; IS FOR LAWRENCE PEOPLE. JANE GOVERNOR, HE SAYS THAT YOU HAVE TRUST THE GAS COMPANIES, IT SHOULD BE STRONGER SURVEILLANCE. DO YOU ACCEPT ALL RESPONSIBILITIES? GOV. BAKER BEFORE EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS, THERE IS A TRAGEDY AND IT MOUNDS VERY FRESHING FOR EERYONE. I stayed there for 24 hours after the explosions that I signed in the emergency declaration and I became aware of the process of implementing the immediate restoration project and the project. the removal of Colombia. WE ALSO EQUIPED A SURVEILLANCE TEAM TO MONITOR THE WORK ASSOCIATED WITH RECONSTRUCTION OF THE EVENT PIPE, TO OPERATE THE SERVICE LINE AND FROM HOME TO HOME. MANY PEOPLE HAVE SAID THAT NOVEMBER 19TH IS REALIZING THAT THE GOOD NEWS IS THE MAIN PIPE, IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE SERVICE LINES WILL BE REALIZED IN THE GREAT CHALLENGE, IT'S THE HOUSE AT L & # 39; INSIDE, WHICH IS COMPLETELY HUGE. BUT BY WORKING WITH THE MARSHALS OF FIREFIGHTERS, THE FIRE CHIEF AND A POWER ALL OTHER PEOPLE IN THE FIELD OF INSPECTION, ELECTRICIAN AND PLUMBING, WE HAVE PROGRESSED AND WE ARE HIT THIS SECOND TIME. JANE DOES YOUR SUPERVISION HAVE BEEN STRONGER BEFORE IT ARRIVED? GOV. BAKER: THE NTSB COPIES AT A REVIEW. I talked to them around 3 pm in the morning, the night of the original explosions and told them that we would give them all the help they needed. WE ALSO TAKEN TIME TO TALK TO THE ATTORNEY GENERAL, WHO HAS BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL NOT TO INDICATE THAT DOCUMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH ANOTHER OF THESE ELEMENTS MAY BE DESTROYED AND THAT THEY ARE ALL TO CONSTITUTE THAT WE HAVE HELD SOMEONE. ONE WHO NEEDS TO BE RESPONSIBLE, RESPONSIBLE. ABSOLUTELY. MR GONZALEZ, THIS WRONG NEW IS FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE AFFECTED AREA WILL NOT HAVE A GAS NETWORK FOR AN ADDITIONAL MONTH NOW BECAUSE IT IS NOT SUFFICIENT. Let me say that there was not enough control before. THERE ARE TWO GAS INSPECTORS. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PREDICTED WEEKS BEFORE THE INCIDENT. FOR MORE THAN 21,000 INFRASTRUCTURES OF GAS PIPES. THIS IS THE SAME REPUBLIC BOOK OF A SMALL GOVERNMENT. THE GOVERNMENT REALLY DOES IMPORTANT THINGS AS PROTECTING PEOPLE. WE NEED TO PROTECT PEOPLE AGAINST EXPLOSIONS FROM NATURAL GAS PIPELINES. FOR ANOTHER UTILITY ISSUE NOW. ANTHONY: IN LOCKING THE NATION'S GRID, YOU HAVE EFFORTED TO COMBINE BOTH SIDES. FOUR MONTHS, WORKERS ARE STILL OUT OF WORK. YOU SAY THAT YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT SECURITY QUESTIONS, WHAT IS YOUR ADMINISTRATION DOING TO END THE STANDOFF? GOV. BAKER: WE ENCOURAGED BOTH SIDES TO COME TOGETHER AND END. WE HAVE MADE DISCUSSIONS BETWEEN BOTH SIDES. WE HAVE PLACED A MORATORIUM THAT FINALLY SAYS BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF HAND-WORK AND LACK OF RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO THE NATIONAL NETWORK BECAUSE OF THE LATCH WHICH THEY CAN DO ONLY WHAT I WANT TO DESCRIBE AS A WORK OF STATUTORY AND ENERGY WORK. IT'S MY HOPE THAT WIL PROD NATIONAL GRI AND THE STEEL PLAYERS GO TOGETHER TO OBTAIN THIS CONTRACT. WHAT WE HAVE DONE TO ENSURE THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO IMPROVE THESE PEOPLE IN THE MERRIMACK VALLEY, IT IS WE ENSURED THAT ALL THE NECESSARY STATIONERY IS REALIZED FOR THEIR POSSIBILITY OF WORKING WORKERS IN THE MERRIMACK VALLEY TO WORK IN THE MERRIMACK VALLEY WAS THUS PLACED IN PLACE. I think it's fair to say that everyone wants to see this end of lock, and I believe in keeping the feet of the national grid on fire for not allowing them to do anything other than their regulatory work in case Emergency, that is, MAKE ADVANCE DISCUSSION. ANTHONY: MR. GONZALEZ, WHAT DOES HIS REPLY MISS? WHAT HAVE YOU MADE DIFFERENT? M. GONZALEZ I WILL HAVE INTERVENE IMMEDIATELY, MONTHS. THE TREATMENT OF WORKERS THROUGH THE NATIONAL GRID IS REPREHENSIBLE. They were stuck with their jobs. Do not get paid. DISEASE INSURANCE WITHDRAWN FROM THEIR FAMILIES. Set aside safety concerns related to work done by temporary workers. HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN DEPOSITED TO THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC UTILITIES WEEKS BEFORE THE DISASTER IN THE MERRIMACK VALLEY WITHOUT ANSWER. I AM WITH WORKERS, WORKERS ENSECTED IN THE MINISTRY OF UTILITIES TO EXPRESS THE CONCERN OF SECURITY OF VIOLATIONS. THEY HAVE BEEN TREATED REPREHENSIBLE AND THERE ARE REAL CONSEQUENCES. I would have intervened IMMEDIATELY. I WANT TO SAY, I KNOW THAT THE LEADERS OF GAS COMPANIES AND OTHER PUBLIC SERVICES COMPLETE GOVERNOR BAKER'S BUSINESS. I AM IN THIS COMBAT FOR ALL FAMILIES OF THE STATE, ALL THE SMALL MECS LIKE THESE WORKERS, AND THAT IS THE ONE WHERE I WILL COMBAT. ANTHONY: CAN YOU GIVE US A DATE OF DEATH TEST DATE WHEN YOU WANT TO ESTABLISH A NEW CONTRACT BETWEEN BOTH PARTIES AND WHEN YOU WANT THOSE WORKERS TO RETURN TO WORK? GOV. BAKER: I WOULD LIKE THEIR RETURN TO WORK NOW. THE REASON WHICH COULD LEAD TO CONSTRAINTS ON WORK WAS ENABLING THE NATIONAL NETWORK BECAUSE WE WERE CONCERNED WITH SECURITY ISSUES Delegates issued a long memo to the national network on security issues, about their work for which they were still working – in the meantime. THE BEST WAY WE CAN BRING TO THIS IS TO ENSURE THAT IT DOES NOTHING, THEY ARE NOT QUALIFIED. They work short which is what they do now. Mr. GONZALEZ: ANOTHER PURPOSE TO ADD TO THAT. THERE IS A GREAT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE GOVERNOR AND ME ON ENERGY NEEDS, IN GENERAL. IT SUPPORTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF GAS LINE IN THE STATE. I strongly oppose it. I will do everything in my power to prevent the expansion of the natural gas pipeline infrastructure. We do not need it. IT IS ALSO OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOSSIL FUELS. Have we been reminded, it is dangerous. THIS IS A BIG DANGER – A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN US WHAT A THOUGHT SHOULD BE CONSCIOUS. GOV. BAKER: FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO INDICATE THAT OUR ADMINISTRATION IS THE ONE THAT CREATED AN OFFSHORE WIND INDUSTRY ON THE EAST COAST OF THE UNITED STATES. THE PROCESS THAT WE HAVE WORKED WITH OUR COLLEAGUES IN LEGISLATURE TO PLACE THIS, AND TOGETHER, CHOQUA EVERYONE WHEN IT COMES FROM THE PRICE POINT. CONSEQUENTLY, THE CONNECTICUT SAUTE AT RHODE ISLAND, IN NEW YORK, IN VIRGINIA DELAWARE, EVERYWHERE IN THE COAST. IF IT IS REQUESTED TO SWITCH TO REDUCE OUR CONFIDENCE ON FOSSIL FUELS, IT IS CREATING AFFORDABLE ALTERNATIVES AND WE HAVE MOVED THAT BALL TO THE FIELD. BOB: UMAS BOSTON GRADUATE STUDENT IN THIS NEXT QUESTION. WHAT IS THE GOVERNOR'S FUNCTIONING IN PREVENTING OFFENSES AGAINST HATE, SUCH AS MASSAGE TO MASSAGE AT THE SYNAGOGUE OF PITTSBURGH? M. GONZALEZ, YOU ARE IN CURRENT. Mr. GONZALEZ I think it is more important than ever that we have public leaders, including the governor, who emphatically speaks out against hate crimes. THE TRAGEDY AT PITTSBURGH WAS MEDICINAL ACTION: HATE AND VIOLENCE. AND OUR INCENTIVE PRESIDENT. THIS NATURE CONDUCTS WITH HATEFUL AND DIVISIVE LANGUAGE. WE NEED PUBLIC LEADERS, WE WILL BE STRONGLY AGAINST HIM. I AM RECENTLY SUPPORTING THE READING MEMBERS WHERE THEY RECENTLY FIND TWO SWASTIKAS IN THEIR HIGH SCHOOL. I spent the last weekend at a rally with transgender people coming together to not just pass question three, but against hatred. WE LIVE IN REALLY DIFFICULT TIMES AT THIS TIME AND WE NEED RESPONSIBLE AUDIENCES THAT ARE STRONG AND RESISTANT TO THE TYPES OF OUR PRESIDENT'S COMMENTS. BOB: DO YOU SAY THAT GOVERNOR BAKER IS NOT COATED? MR. GONZALEZ: I DO NOT THINK THAT IT IS ENOUGH, NO, TO SPEAK AGAINST OUR PRESIDENT. GOV. BAKER: Let me start by saying one of the things we did two years ago when we saw the spiciness in hate crimes, is that we put together a working group . AND THIS WORKING GROUP HAS MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY OF FAITH, THE COMMUNITY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND THE COMMUNITY OF EDUCATION. They engage in discussions around sharing intelligence, awareness, best practices and other types of opportunities to improve the way we deal with all these issues. I think that's the most important thing you need to do. CREATE A MECHANISM IN WHICH ALL AFFECTED ACTORS CAN PARTICIPATE AND AVOID THAT THIS KIND DOES NOT MOBILIZE A DISCUSSION. THE SECOND THING YOU DO, IT IS YOU CONTINUE TO BUILD ON THE BIPARTISEN EFFORTS THAT HAVE BEEN CONTINUED AROUND THE CONTROL OF FIREARMS. WE HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE COUNTRIES OF THE COUNTRY TO REMOVE BUMP STOCKS AFTER THE HORRIBLE TRAGEDY IN NEVADA. WE ALSO EQUALIZE ONE OF THE SOME STATES IN THE COUNTRY TO PASS THE LEGISLATION ON EXTREME PROTECTION ORDERS. MY TIMES, JOHN ROSENTHAL WAS AT MY OFFICE TODAY, SPEAKING ABOUT THE WORK DONE HERE IN THE COMMONWEALTH ON FIREARMS CONTROL AND WHAT WE CAN DO BE GOING BEFORE. I think the things we do that are effective are all as important as what we say. I have spoken against the Speaker on many occasions because his language in the field of medicine is destructive and breathtaking. MARIA: And you do not agree with that? M. GONZALEZ I DO. I think what you say as a government is important and what you do as well. SOME FIREARMS LEGISLATION, THE COMMON FIREARMS LAWS THAT HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED, ARE APPROVED BY GOVERNOR BAKER, NOT BECAUSE ITS GOVERNOR LEADERSHI, YOU SUPPORT I MCMAHON, REPLACE AS GENERAL NOTICE, WHO HAD SAID IS GOD GIVEN THE RIGHT TO ASSASS RIFLES. WHO HAVE RECENTLY SAID, IMMIGRANTS ARE WILD. Talk about hate. WHY DO HE THINK IT IS A BETTER ATTORNEY GENERAL? GOV. BAKER: FIRST AS REGARDS MY POSITION OF SUPPORT OR ENCOURAGED OR LOOKED AT OUR FIREARMS LAWS, I WAS THE FIRST GOVERNOR IN THE COUNTRY TO TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF USING THE GRAPPLE. I WORKED WITH COLLEAGUES ON THIS LEGISLATION. I have a grade D from the NRA. I was proud to have endorsed it in every city for gun safety, which is the largest and most important gun advocacy group in the UK. GONZALEZ: WHY DO YOU THINK THAT JIM MCMAHON WILL BE A BETTER ATTORNEY GENERAL? GOV. BAKER: I've worked closely with him on many issues. WE HAVE HAD A GOOD WORKING RELATIONSHIP. I have said months ago that I would support this post and I respect my commitment in this regard. MR. GONZALEZ SO YOU THINK WHAT HE WOULD BE A BETTER ATTORNEY GENERAL THAN THAT? GOV. BAKER: I said I was going to support the ticket. I have worked diligently with the Attorney General on a variety of issues. Mr. GONZALEZ: IT'S IMPORTANT. BECAUSE THE GOVERNOR SAYS THAT HIS LOYALTY WILL BE IN THE POST OF THE REPUBLIC, WHATEVER THE CONSEQUENCES. Whatever type of person is going to be our Attorney General, or replace ELISABETH WARREN, ANTI-CHOICE, ANTI-COMMON LOW ANW PEOPLE A LOT OF WHAT YOU SAY TO BE FOR. IF YOU ARE REALLY COMMITTED TO MAKE COMMON, SENIOR FIREARMS LAWS WILL NOT ASK PEOPLE OF THE STATE AND YOU DO NOT PERSONALLY SUPPORT THEM. GOV. BAKER IT IS CLEAR Where I am on THOMAS COMMON SENSE. By the way, I'm not a race for those. THIS IS A RACE FOR GOVERNOR. Mr. GONZALEZ: IT'S IMPORTANT. THIS IS A RACE FOR GOVERNOR. I KNOW IT. BUT YOU HAVE CHECKED MY POINT, THE GOVERNOR YOU DO NOT THINK THIS IS IMPORTANT. AND WE HAVE NOW A CHAIRMAN WHO THREATENS OUR VALUES, WHO REMOVE THIS COUNTRY, THAT THREATENS OUR DEMOCRACY. AND YOU ARE FACEFUL TO THE REPUBLICAN PARTY ABOVE YOUR COMMITMENT TO THESE VALUES. AND I THINK THIS IS IMPORTANT, THAT IS WHY I'M RUN FOR THE GOVERNOR AND NOT SOME OTHER – IN SOME OTHER PLACE. I think we need a governor who will stand up and be consistent on these issues. GOV. BAKER: I did not vote for Donald Trump. I do not intend to vote for him if he is running for re-election, but most people know where I come from with regard to the president. On many issues, I have worked with Democrats and Republicans to push back, appeal and work against a series of his initiatives. AND IN MANY CASES, WE HAVE SUCCESSFUL. In some ways, the ability to succeed and be effective really makes a difference for the people here in the massachuset. MARIA: THIS IS STILL STILL ON THE SUBJECT. ADRIAN: GOVERNOR BAKER, YOU HAVE ANNOUNCED YOUR VOTE FOR GEOFF DIEHL, WHO HAD SAID HE WAS RETURNED TO WASHINGTON. HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT? GOV. BAKER: Let's start with the AFFORDABLE CARE ACT. That's where I put together a coalition and worked with my colleagues a member of the House, Senate, Democrats and Republicans, to prevent the massachus lose $ 1 billion in federal recreation if we came back to life. WE HAVE DONE SIMILAR THINGS WITH THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH. PART OF A GREAT COALITION THAT ALSO INVOLVED SENATOR WARREN, O WE HAVE BROUGHT FROM A FUNDING COVERAGE TO AN INCREASE WHICH, HEREIN IN THE MASSACHUSETTS, WITH ALL MONEY AND L 'ORDER. EFFORT THAT WE HAVE MADE, MADE A DIFFERENCE. TIME AND TIME STILL ON IMMIGRATION, TAC DAC AND ANY SERIES OF QUESTIONS I HAVE WORKED COLLABORATIVELY WITH MY COLLEAGUES TO PURSUE AGAINST PRESIDENTIAL POLICIES THAT I DO NOT SUPPORT. THAT SAYS THAT I HAVE SAID PRESSING THE TICKET AT LEAST OF THE CAMPAIGN, AND I PLAN TO HONOR MY WORD ON THIS. ADRIAN TO BE CLEAR ASK ALL YOUR SUPPORTS, INCLUDING DEMOCRATS AND INDEPENDENTS, TO VOTE FOR HIM? GOV. BAKER: I say I support the ticket. He has to run his race, we have to do hours. MR GONZALEZ: JUST TO BE CLEAR, WHEN GOVERNOR BAKER SAYS THAT HE PRESS THE TICKET, HE DOES NOT USE THIS WORD, BUT HE IS SUPPORTING THE REPUBLICAN TICKET. THE BETTER I KNOW BY ITS ANSWERS, IT BLINDLY SUPPORTS THE REPUBLICAN TICKET, WHATEVER THE CONSEQUENCES. THAT DOES NOT MATTER WHO WE WILL SEND THE COCHAIR OF DONALD TRUMP'S CAMPAIGN TO THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES WHICH DOES ALL IN ITS POWER TO CANCEL THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN TO CHOOSE AND SUPPORT THE NRA AGENDA AND THE YEARS LGBT. THIS IS A RUBBER STAMP FOR DONALD TRUMP'S AGENDA. TO PUT SOMEONE WHO BELIEVES THAT THERE IS A RIGHT GIVEN TO STAPLING ARMS AND DESCRIBING IMMIGRANTS AS SAVINGS, YOU CAN NOT AVOID AND I WILL BE A GOVERNOR FOR THE RIGHT OF WOMEN TO CHOOSE AND WHITE PUNS, NOT SOMETIMES, BUT ALL THE TIME. GOV. BAKER, I HAVE SUPPORTED WOMEN'S REPRODUCTION RIGHTS MY WORLD OF POLITICAL CAREER IN A GREAT PRIDE OF WHY THE PREVIOUS PARENTHOOD HAS BEEN DEVOTED TO MANY WORK WE HAVE GIVEN TO THE PROTECTION OF WOMAN ' AI SIGNED THE TRANSGENDED LEGISLATION ON QUESTION 3 IN SUPPORT. I donated to the campaign myself. I HAVE A LONG TRACK RECORD ON THIS ISSUE. THE MASSACHUSETTS PEOPLE INCLUDE THAT. IT IS WELL THE REASONS WE HAVE GOT THE SUPPORT OF SOME OF THE COUNTRIES 'WIDEST FIREARMS CONTROL ORGANIZATIONS. They believe that we have done the things that matter most and are most important to people. BOB: JANET TO THE NEXT QUESTION. JANE YOU – WITH ALL THE SURFACE STORIES TODAY ABOUT SEXUAL HARASSMENT, ARE THERE ANY INCIDENTS AT WORK WHEN YOU ARRIVE IN YOUR MEMORY BANK WHICH HOLDS YOU TO HAVE TO HAVE DIFFERENT CONFRONT? MR. GONZALEZ: NO, THERE IS NO. I have never been challenged by a leadership position with a situation where someone said that he had been harassed or treated inappropriately. IT IS A HUGE PROBLEM, IF THE MOVEMENT ALSO SHOWED THAT IT IS A DISEASE OF OUR CULTURE AND WE HAVE TOLERATED THE INTOLERABLE AND WE NEED TO FIGHT AGAINST. One of the things I said I would like to do and have been very clear is that I think the license for the winning casino should be canceled. – CASINO WYNN SHOULD BE REVISED. THE COMPANY KNOWN STEVE SYNN – THE CONDUCT OF WYNN AND DID NOTHING. THEY ARE NOT SUITABLE, THE COMPANY, TO DETERMINE A MASSACHUSETTS LICENSE. WE NEED TO HOLD NOT ONLY THE PEOPLE WHO INVOLVED IN THIS ACCOUNTABILITY, WE NEED TO KEEP THE INSTITUTION TO MAKE IT ACCOUNTABLE, AND I MAKE IT AS GOVERNOR. JANET: And you, governor? GOV. BAKER ALL THE ROLE OF LEADERSHIP I've NEVER HAD A ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY. WE ARE THOSE WHO HAVE ENSURED THAT PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT BOTH DURING MY TIME WITHIN THE GOVERNMENT OF THE STATE AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR WHICH THEY CAN REACH AND SPEAK TO SOMEWHAT IT IS WANT TO RAISE A PROBLEM. EITHER A NUMBER 1-800 ANONYMOUS OR THE NAME OF SPECIFIC PEOPLE. IF ANY PERSON RAISES ALLEGATIONS OR QUESTIONS RELATED THERETO, WE IMMEDIATELY INVITE THEM AND TREAT THEM WITH THEM. IN SOME CASES, IF WE NEED TO SEEK INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATORS, WE DID AS ALSO. WHAT YOU CAN DO BETTER AND MOST IMPORTANT IS TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE A ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY AND IF PEOPLE GO FORWARD, TREAT WITH THEM QUICKLY AND APPROPRIATELY AND ENSURE DISCRETION AND PROTECTION OF PEOPLE WHO LIVE FORWARD MARIA: WE'LL MOVE ON THE QUICK PART OF OUR DEBATE. SHORT QUESTIONS AND YES, WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE RESPONSE FROM THE STORE. Most of the time, yes or no, if you want to be so nice. Once the pottery stores are open, would you agree to have marijuana in your house? Mr. GONZALEZ: NO. GOV. BAKER I AM WITH MY OPPONENT ON THAT. MARIA: Let's see what happens with the next question. THE WORKERS OF BOSTON HOTEL ARE GREAT. Are you on the employee side? What were the companies? GOV. BAKER I AM A GREAT FAN OF LOCAL UNITY. WE HAVE CURRENTLY MOVED OUR ELECTION NIGHT ACTIVITY AT ONE OF THE HOT HOTELS. WE ARE WITH EMPLOYEES. Mr. GONZALEZ: I've stung with employees five times because I'm with them. AS GOVERNOR, I WILL BE WITH WORKERS LIKE THESE. MARIA: GOVERNOR BAKER DOES NOT ACCEPT A $ 65,000 HOUSEHOLD ALLOWANCE, REJECTING AN INCREASE IN SALARY. IF YOU ARE ELECTED AS GOVERNOR, DO YOU REFUSE THEM ALSO? Mr. GONZALEZ, I was clear on the fact that I would take the salary and the allowance for which I would not look for anything else. GOV. BAKER: LOOK, I AGREE THAT because I hated the process that the legislation had enacted to deliver it and I did not think the Commonwealth was able to handle it. BUT IT IS NOW A STATUTORY REQUIREMENT. That's what it is and if I get a second term, I'll take it just because that's what it is. MARIA: The idea of building a dike around Boston, do you support it? GOV. BAKER I READ A GLOBAL AND EFFICIENT STUDY ON THIS ISSUE. MARIA: YES OR NO GOV. BAKER: Let me finish. He said that he would give us a small room. Mr. GONZALEZ: A LITTLE MARIA: A SMALL. GOV. BAKER WE HAVE A PLANNING PROGRAM IN PLACE FOR ALL CITIES AND CITIES THAT PLANNING VULNERABILITY, INCLUDING BOSTON. A LOT OF BOSTON SPOKEN TO THE PROCESS. This is a problem of NORMA, which is at the top of the list with respect to the things we need to work on. Mr. GONZALEZ, I DO NOT KNOW SOUTH OF SEAWALL, BUT WE NEED ALL THAT WE CAN POSSIBLY BE ABLE TO USE CLIMATE CHANGE. MARI TRY TO KEEP THIS FOR YES OR NO. DO YOU ACCEPT A RAILING BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH STATION? Mr. GONZALEZ: YES. GOV. BAKER I SUPPORT TO DO WHAT IT IS IS THE BEST OPPORTUNITY TO GET PEOPLE FROM WHERE THEY HAVE COME WHERE THEY TRY TO GO. WE HAVE MAKED A GREAT STUDY THAT SUGGESTED THAT THE PRICE T WAS BETWEEN 15 AND 20 BILLION DOLLARS. THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM – MARIA: YES OR NO? GOV. BAKER, IT IS IMPORTANT TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM THAT I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS HOW IT IS HOW IT IS. BOB: Let's talk about the movement. ADRIAN WALKER HAS A QUESTION. ADRIAN: TRAFFIC GETS MORE THAN EVERY YEAR AAA SAYS WE HAVE – WE HAVE THE FIFTH LARGEST COMMUNITY IN THE COUNTRY. DO WE HAVE TO EXPAND TOOLS OR DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER IDEAS TO CUT TRAFFIC? GOV. BAKER: We have to follow the $ 8 billion plan for the MBTA. THIS WILL INCREASE T CAPACITY AND SYSTEM ON LINE OF ADMINISTRATION BOARDS AND THE RED LINE OF ABOUT 50% AND 15% ON THE GREEN AND IMPORTANT LINE, WE WILL INCREASE OUR ABILITY TO EXTEND THE RAIL SERVICE COMMUTER . IF YOU CAN NOT GIVE PEOPLE A RELIABLE AND RELIABLE ALTERNATIVE, THE PROBABILITY THAT WILL REMOVE YOU FROM THE ROAD WILL BE LIMITEDLY LATE. FROM MY POINT OF VIEW, THE WORK HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT BY THE TAX CONTROL BOARD AND OUR ADMINISTRATION IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THEM UNTIL THEY CAN BE IMPLEMENTED – IN A SYSTEM OF EVERYTHING IS MORE THAN 50 YEARS, I THINK THIS IS THE RIGHT WAY TO FOLLOW. IF WE WANT TO REVEAL PEOPLE ON ROADS, YOU MUST ENSURE YOU MAKE THESE INVESTMENTS IN PUBLIC TRANSIT. WE HAVE ADDED 225.0 JOBS IN THE PAST FOUR YEARS, WHICH CERTAINLY DID SOMETHING TO MAKE TRAFFIC. ADRIAN: MR. GONZALEZ, SAME QUESTION. M. GONZALEZ I WOULD BE OPEN TO THE VARIABLE RATE TOLLING AS POSED BY THE GOVERNOR. WE ABSOLUTELY NEED TO FIX OUR PUBLIC TRANSIT SYSTEM AND THE GOVERNOR DOES NOT DO SOMEWHAT. IT HAS TAKEN A STATUS APPROACH WHICH REFUSES TO RECOGNIZE THAT WE NEED ADDITIONAL INCOME TO FIX OUR TRANSIT SYSTEM. NOT ONLY THE REGIONAL BUS SERVICE OF THE MBTA ACROSS THE STATE, WHICH IT CONSENTS TO TRY TO REDUCE FUNDING. THE GOVERNOR'S PLAN WILL BE IN GOOD REPAIR AND WILL BE TAKEN 15 YEARS AND IT WAS NEVER MADE A PLAN BASED ON A DEPOSIT FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. IT DOES NOT HAVE AN MEANS OF FINANCING THAT. More like 25 years old. 15 years is ridiculous. I will have a sense of urgency. I HAVE A PLAN REVEAL $ 3 BILLION OF WEALTH, TO INVEST THE ROTATION OF INTERESTS AND EDUCATION. I've been open and honest that we need to give it and treat it with an emergency, to do it. WE FEEL THE PEOPLE OF MASSACHUSETTS. MARIA: THIS IS A PERFECT SEGUE FOR OUR NEXT QUESTION. ANTHONY: MR. GONZALEZ, AS YOU HAVE MENTIONED, YOU OFFER THESE GREAT INVESTMENTS IN TRANSPORTATION. TO PAY THEM, YOU WANT HIGHE TAXES ON WEALTH, TAX ON PRIVATE COLLEGE GIFT. THE OFFICERS OF YOUR OWN PARTY HAVE SHOWN VERY LITTLE APPETITE FOR THESE TYPES OF TAX HIKES. WILL IT RESIST IN YOUR PROJECTS TO IMPROVE TRANSPORTATION? Mr. GONZALEZ, I DO NOT KNOW ANY OF THE OFFICERS OF OUR PARTY WHO SAID THAT THEY ARE OPPOSITE. GOV. GOV. BAKER: EST-CE QUE JE PEUX JUSTE DIRE QUE CELUI-CI QUE J'AI BESOIN D'ENTENDRE MON PARENTAL SON PARENT SUR LES GRANDS INVESTISSEMENTS QU'IL VOULE FAIRE, IL N'A AUCUNE CAPACITÉ DE PAYER CEUX-CI. C’EST TELLEMENT D’HONNEUR DE DIRE DONNER AUX PERSONNES QU'IL PEUT FINANCER LE RAILING NORD-SUD, EST-OUEST. MARIA: Comment allez-vous payer pour cela? GOV. BAKER: – CE SONT DES dizaines DE MILLIARDS DE DOLLARS, DES PROJETS POUR LESQUELS IL PROPOSE DES PROJETS, BEAUCOUP DONT NE COMMENCENT PAS AVANT QUATRE ANS POUR GÉNÉRER DES REVENUS. GOV. BAKER: LE PLAN DE 3 MILLIARDS DE DOLLARS COMMENCE EN I 2023, À LA FIN DE NOTRE INVESTISSEMENT DE 8 MILLIARDS DE DOLLARS. POINT NUMBER TWO IS THE 25 YEARS HE TALKS ABOUT. THAT IS WHERE WE STARTED. THAT IS WHAT WE INHERITED FROM THE PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION. BECAUSE WE MANAGED TO MAKE SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENTS IN THE STATE OF GOOD REPAIR, IN THE REPAIRED BACKLOG OVER THE LAST COUPLE YEARS, BIGGER THAN HAS EVER BEEN DONE SINCE THEY HAD BEEN KEEPING SCORE, WE TOOK 10 YEARS OFF THE STATE OF GOOD REPAIR. OVER THE NEXT COUPLE YEARS WITH THE MOMENTUM WE HAVE CREATED, IT IS REALLY GOING TO START TO FEEL DIFFERENT OF PEOPLE AS THE TRAINS AND SIGNAL AND SWITCH TECHNOLOGY GETS PUT INTO PLACE. WHEN YOU ARE DEALING WITH A SYSTEM WHERE EVERYTHING IS 50 YEARS OLD, THE UPGRADES MAKE A NORM IS DIFFERENT WITH RESPECT TO RELIABILITY, CAPACITY AND PERFORMANCE. BOB: WE’RE GOING TO MOVE ON. HOUSING. GOV. BAKER I AM SURE MY OPPONENT AND I WOULD BE HAPPY TO TALK ABOUT THIS ALL MIGHT. ADRIAN: HOUSING IN MASSACHUSETTS RANKS AMONG THE MOST EXPENSIVE IN THE COUNTRY. HOW CAN THE STATE INCREASE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, ESPECIALLY FOR WORKING FAMILIES WHO DO NOT QUALIFY FOR SUBSIDIZED HOUSING BUT CAN AFFORD MARKET RACE HOUSING IN AREAS CLOSE TO JOBS AND GOOD SCHOOLS? GOV. BAKER: HOUSING IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS WE FACE AS A COMMONWEALTH WE USED TO 30,000 UNITS OF HOUSING EVERY YEAR FOR LIKE, 40 YEAR STARTING IN THE 1990’S THAT NUMBER FELL TO ABOUT 8000 YEAR. FOR 25 YEARS WE HAVE BEEN BUILDING LESS THAN HALF NEW HOUSING WE USED TO BUILD EVERY YEAR LIKE CLOCKWORK. WE DON’T HAVE MUCH INVENTORY. WHEN THE INVENTORY GOES ON THE MARKET, PRICES GO UP, PEOPL CANNOT AFFORD IT AND IT PUSHES THEM FARTHER AND FARTHER AWAY TO FIND A PLACE THEY CAN AFFORD. WE WORKED WITH EVERYONE IN THE SPACE TO GENERATE 100 35,000 UNITS OF HOUSING OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. TO GET US BACK INTO THE BUSINESS OF HOUSING PRODUCTION. CAME OUT OF COMMITTEE 12-1, IT IS CURRENTLY SITTING IN THE HOUSE COMMITTEE. MY HOPE IS THE LEGISLATURE WILL ACT ON THAT INFORMALLY OR TAKEN UP NEXT YEAR BECAUSE WE HAVE GOT TO BUILD MORE HOUSING HERE IN THE COMMONWEALT IT IS A NUMBER ONE ISSUE FOR ME AND AN ISSUE I BELIEVE WE HAVE TO SOLVE FROM AN EQUITY POINT OF VIEW, ECONOMIC POINT OF VIE IF WE TRULY WANT TO BE A PLACE WHERE YOUNG FAMILIES IN YOUNG PEOPLE AND MODERATE INCOME FOLKS CAN AFFORD TO LIVE. M. GONZALEZ: THIS IS A HUGE CRISIS IN THE STATE. I HEAR ABOUT IT A LOT ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL. OUR AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS AND ARE BROKEN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM ARE THE TWO THINGS THAT WOULD DRAG OUR ECONOMY BACKWARDS IF WE DON’T GET SERIOUS ABOUT IT. I WILL PROVIDE BOLD LEADERSHIP ON THIS. I WILL DOUBLE TH STATE’S CAPITAL INVESTMENT IN AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECTS BY REPRIORITIZING CAPITAL INVESTMENTS. I AM GOING TO DO REAL REGULATORY REFORM. WE NEED EVERY COMMUNITY TO BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION BECAUSE WE ARE ALL GOING TO START FALLING BACKWARDS IF THIS DRAGS OUR ECONOMY DOWN. TH GOVERNOR’S PLAN HE MENTIONED WAS NOT PASSED BY THE LEGISLATURE AND IT WOULD HAVE ASKED MUNICIPALITIES MY SLEEP — NICE TO LOOSEN ZONING RULES TO CREATE MORE HOUSING. WE’RE GOING TO BE SERIOUS ABOUT THIS. I AM GOING TO PASS REAL REGULATORY REFORM THAT ENSURES WE ARE INCREASING THE HOUSING SUPPLY ACROSS THE STATE TO DEAL WITH THIS CRISIS. GOV. BAKER HOW COME YOU DID NOT DO THAT WHEN YOU WERE SECRETARY? M. GONZALEZ: IT WAS NOT MY JOB. GOV. BAKER: WE HAVE HAD A HOUSING CRISIS HERE FOR A LONG TIME. DURING YOUR TERM IN OFFICE, NOBODY DID ANYTHING TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. WE INCREASED THE STATE’S INVESTMENT IN AFFORDABLE HOUSING BY 25% AND WE TOOK OFFICE. YOU JUST SIGNED THE LARGEST HOUSING BOND BILL IN STATE HISTORY. THE FIRST SERIOUS ATTEMPT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT HOUSING PRODUCTION IN MASSACHUSETTS WAS DONE BY OUR ADMINISTRATIO IT IS STILL PENDING BEFORE THE LEGISLATURE. I BELIEVE WE HAVE OPPORTUNITY TO GET IT DONE IN THE INFORMAL SETTING. M. GONZALEZ: IT IS NOT SERIOUS ATTEMPT IN THE HOUSING ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS DESCRIBE IT AS A BABY STEP, OR A MINI STEP, WHICH IS CONSISTENT WITH THE STATUS QUO APPROACH. I WAS NOT IN CHARGE OF HOUSING WHEN I WAS THE SECRETARY OF FINANCE, BUT IT WILL TAKE RESPONSIBLE FOR IT WHEN I’M GOVERNOR. YOU HAVE BEEN GOVERNOR FOR FOUR YEARS. YOU JU PROPOSED A BABY STEP ON HOUSING IN YOUR THIRD YEAR. IT IS NOT GOOD ENOUG THIS IS A CRISIS IN THE STATE. THIS IS THE THIRD DEBATE WE HAVE BEEN IN. YOU KEEP WANTING TO TA ABOUT THE PATRICK ADMINISTRATION. I HAVE NOT HEARD YOU GIVE A SINGLE PROPOSAL FOR WHAT YOU WOULD DO AS GOVERNOR IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS. BOB: WE’RE GOING TO MOVE ON. GOV. BAKER: CAN WE TALK ABOUT OUR $8 BILLION ENTRANCE ROTATION? BOB: I THINK WE DID TALK ABOUT THAT. [LAUGHTER] BO ONTO ANOTHER SPEED ROUND. REMEMBER, SUPERSHORT, OK? THE FIRST QUESTION IS THREE WORDS. THREE WORD ANSWER. M. GONZALEZ, THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE PRESIDENT TRUMP. M. GONZALEZ HATEFUL. RACIST. UNAMERICAN. GOV. BAKER ONLY HREE. UM, OUTRAGEOUS. DISGRACEFUL. AND A DIVIDER. BOB: NEX QUESTION, SHOULD THE WORLD SERIES RED SOX GO TO THE WHITE HOUSE? GOV. BAKER: I THINK THAT IS COMPLETELY UP TO THE TEAM. MY GUESS IS IF THEY GET ASKED, PEOPLE WILL MAKE WHATEVER DECISION THEY THINK IS BEST FOR THEM AND I THINK THAT IS OK. M. GONZALEZ: I’M GOING TO INVITE THEM TO THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE AND I AM GOVERNOR. BOB: MR. GONZALEZ — GOV. BAKER: GOOD LUCK GETTING THEM TO COME. BOB: MR. GONZALEZ, WHO IS YOUR POLITICAL HERO. M. GONZALEZ: LIVING OR DEAD? BOB: EITHER. M. GONZALEZ: OK. I DON’T HAVE JUST ONE BUT IF I HAD TO PICK ONE I WOULD PROBABLY SAY DEVAL PATRICK. I GOT TO KNOW HIM PERSONALLY, HE IS THE REAL DEAL, HE WAS IN IT FOR THE RIGHT REASONS AND HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR HIM. GOV. BAKER: ABRAHAM LINCOLN. NO ONE ELSE IS CLOSE. BOB: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FAMILY TRADITION? GOV. BAKER: CHRISTMAS MORNING. EVERYBODY IN THE JAMMIES, COFF EE, TON OF BREAKFAST. SON IS A BETTER COOK THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE FAMILY. SORRY, LAUREN. A LOT OF CHRISTMAS — BOB: WE ARE GOING TO STOP YOU BECAUSE WE DON’T WANT TO GET YOU IN MORE TROUBLE WITH YOUR WIFE. [LAUGHTER] M. GONZALEZ: SUNDAY NIGHT DINNER THE CAMPAIGN SCREWED THIS UP A LITTLE BIT, BUT IT IS THE TIME USUALLY WHEN THE ENTIRE FAMILY IS ALL THERE WITH THE KIDS AND WE HAVE DINNER TOGETHER AND WE ACTUALLY TALK. BOB: MR. GONZALEZ WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE THING ON YOUR BUCKET LIST AFTER POLITICS? M. GONZALEZ: I HAVE NO IDEA. HANGING OUT WITH MY WIF BOB: GOVERNOR BAKER, BUCKET LIST AFTER POLITICS. GOV. BAKER: I WOULD LIK TO, UH, I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A TRIP WITH MY WIFE TO SOMEPLACE SHE WANTS TO GO. BOB: GOOD COME BACK. GOV. BAKER: AS JAY POINTED OUT, THIS JOB SUC UP A LOT OF TIME. THERE IS A LOT OF PLACES SHE WOULD LIKE TO VISIT AND I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE HER TO A COUPLE OF THEM. MARIA: LET’S CONTINUE WITH THE QUESTIONS. ANTHONY: GOVERNOR BAKER, THERE IS A LAS VEGAS-STYLE AS YOU KNOW IN SPRINGFIELD NOW BUT MANY WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS TOWNS DO NOT HAVE HIGH-SPEED BROADBAND SERVICE. IT IS 2018. WHAT IS YOUR PLAN TO GIVE THESE COMMUNITIES THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES AS CITIES LIKE BOSTON OR WORCESTER? GOV. BAKER: THIS CAME TO THE ISSU OF THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR AND ME SHORTLY AFTER WE TOOK OFFICE. 53 COMMUNITIES DID NOT HAVE HIGH-SPEED INTERNET. AND WE PUT TOGETHER TEAM AND WE WORKED WITH THE LEGISLATURE TO GET ADDITIONAL FUNDING TO SUPPORT THIS. THEN WE PUT TOGETHER IN MENU THAT LOCAL COMMUNITIES COULD CHOOSE FROM TO GET TO HIGH-SPEED INTERNET. THEIR ARE BIG SWATCHS WHICH ARE COMPLICATED. OF THOSE 53, 50 EITHER HAVE IT OR ARE WORKING ON A PLAN WITH LOCAL UTILITY AND CABLE COMPANY. OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE ALL 53 WITH HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SOONER RATHER THAN LATER. THEY WILL TELL YOU IT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NIGHT AND DAY FOR THEM. WE CONSIDER THIS TO BE A FUNDAMENTAL OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO SERVE THEM AND TO LEVERAGE STATE RESOURCES TO GET SOMETHING REALLY IMPORTANT DONE FOR THEM. M. GONZALEZ: YEAH, BUT THAT IS FOUR YEARS LATER AND SOME STILL DO NOT HAVE IT. THIS IS LIKE RUNNING WATER AT THIS POINT. HIGH-SPEED INTERNET IS CRITICAL. I GO OUT TO THE BERKSHIRES AND HEAR STORIES OF STUDENTS WHO SIT AND LIBRARY PARKING LOTS TO DO THEIR HOMEWOR BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE HIGH-SPEED INTERNET AT HOME. IT IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. GOVERNOR, I WILL DO WHATEVER WE NEED TO DO TO GET THIS ADDRESSED AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. I WANT TO SAY ANOTHER THING. PEOPLE OUT IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS, NOT JUST ON THIS YOU BUT — THIS ISSUE BUT OTHERS, OFTEN FEEL NEGLECTED, AND LEGITIMATELY SO. I WANT TO BE THE GOVERNOR OF THE WHOLE STATE. THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER ISSUES AND CHALLENGES THEY HAVE IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS THAT NEED ADDRESSING THEY DESERVE A PROPORTIONAL SHARE OF THE ATTENTION IN RESOURCE FROM STATE GOVERNMENT, AND I WILL GIVE IT TO THEM. I WANTED TO HAVE A DEBATE IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS. THE GOVERNOR DECLINED. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT DISCUSS ISSUES THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO THEM. BOB: — GOV. BAKER THE SPRINGFIELD REPUBLICAN IN THEIR ENDORSEMENT OF OUR CAMPAIGN SAID THAT MANY GOVERNORS HAVE PROMISED TO PAY ATTENTION TO WESTERN MASS, MOST DON’ OUR ADMINISTRATION HAS MORE THAN DELIVERED ON THAT. WE ARE ENORMOUSLY PROUD OF THAT. JANET: MR. GONZALEZ, THE PILGRIM NUCLEAR POWE PLANT IS SCHEDULED TO SHUT DOWN NEXT SPRING. WITHOUT A FEDERAL PLAN TO DEAL WITH THE DECADES OF NUCLEAR WASTE, THAT MEANS IT WILL REMAIN INDEFINITELY – DO YOU WORRY ABOUT THIS AND WHAT WOULD YOU DO ABOUT IT? M. GONZALEZ: OF COURSE I D THIS IS A FEDERALLY REGULATED ISSUE. BUT THE GOVERNOR SHOULD BE ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN ADVOCATING FOR THE INTERESTS OF THE PEOPLE OF THAT REGION AND OUR ENTIRE TATE. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN, PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERN. SO, WE SHOULD BE CLOSING IT AS QUICKLY AS WE CAN AND STORING THE SPENT FUEL IN AS SAFE AWAY AS POSSIBLE. MY PREFERENCE WOULD BE TO TAKE IT OFF SITE. I KNOW THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS NOT PROVIDED IN ADDITIONAL SITE. I WAS GLAD TO SEE THAT THE COMPANY THAT OWNS THE FACILITY IS NOW PLANNING TO AT LEAST GET THE SPENT FUEL AWAY FROM — FURTHER AWAY FROM THE SEA. BUT I WOULD BE ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN THIS AS GOVERNOR. I DON’T THINK BASED ON WHAT I HAVE HEARD GOVERNOR BAKER HAS BEEN AS ACTIVELY ENGAGED. BUT I THINK THIS IS ONE OF THOSE AREAS WHERE WE NEED A GOVERNOR WHO IS ADVOCATING FOR THE VALUES AND INTERESTS OF PEOPLE OF THE STATE. JANET: GOVERNO HE HAS SUGGESTED YOU HAVE NOT BEEN ENGAGED ENOUGH IN THIS ISSUE. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR ALL THIS NUCLEAR WASTE? GOV. BAKER: OUR BIG OPPORTUNI HAS BEEN TO WORK WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND WITH A LOCAL ADVISORY GROUP THAT W PUT TOGETHER BY WORKING WITH THE LEGISLATURE. IS A STATUTORY COMMUNITY GROUP. WORK WITH THE FEDERAL REGULATORS ON THIS. THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF OPPORTUNITY FOR THE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND PEOPLE IN OUR ADMINISTRATION TO PUSH THE FEDERAL REGULATORS TO DO MORE AND HAVE MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THIS PROCESS WE HAVE ALSO SPENT A LOT OF TIME WAS SENATOR WARREN ON THIS. I THINK IT IS CRITICAL. I AGREE COMPLETELY WITH MY OPPONENT THAT AT THE END OF THE DA HERE THERE ARE SERIOUS ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS KIND OF FUEL. OUR WAY OF DEALING WITH THAT HAS BEEN TO WORK WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THA UNITY — COMMUNITY IN NET AREA AND OUR FEDERAL SENATORS AND LEGISLATORS TO MAKE SURE WE CAN HOLD THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S FEET TO THE FIRE ON THIS. BOB: A CLIMATE CHANGE QUESTION. A STUDENT AT UMA BOSTON’S GRADUATE STUDENTS OMITTED THIS QUESTION. THE UNITED NATIONS WARNS DRAMATIC ACTION IS NEEDED IN THE NEXT DECADE TO AVOID GLOBAL CLIMATE CALAMITY. DOES CARBON PRICING, A TAX ON CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS, MAKE SENSE IN MASSACHUSETTS? M. GONZALEZ: YES IT DOES AND I HAVE BEEN A PROPONENT OF IT THROUGHOUT MY CAMPAIGN. SPENT A LOT OF TIME MEETING WITH ECONOMISTS AND OTHERS, ALL OF WHOM AGREE THAT WE NEED THIS REALLY IMPORTANT INCENTIVE TO DRIV US TO TRUE CLEAN ENERGY ECONOMY AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. THIS IS ONE AREA AMONG MANY WHERE I WILL PROVIDE THE BOLD LEADERSHIP WE NEED THAT WE DON’T HAVE RIGHT NOW. I WILL ACCELERATE OUR TRANSITION TO RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES. I WILL OPPOSE INTO EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO STOP THE EXPANSION OF NATURAL GAS PIPELINE INFRASTRUCTURE, WHICH WE DON’T NEED AND WILL FURTHER OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOSSIL FUEL. I SUPPORT CARBON PRICING. ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS HAVE CONSISTENTLY GIVEN GOVERNOR BAKER’S WORK ON CLIMATE CHANGE A C GRADE. I AM PROUD TO SAY I HAVE THE ENDORSEMENTS OF SOME OF THOSE GROUPS INCLUDING THE SIERRA CLUB BECAUSE I HAVE A BOLD AGENDA IN THIS AREA. AND THIS IS THE MOST SERIOUS THREAT TO OUR WORLD. AND THIS U.N. REPORT THAT THE QUESTION MENTIONED IN THE QUESTION SHOWS THAT IT IS EVEN MORE SERIOUS A A MORE URGENT THREAT THAN WE THOUGHT. WE HAVE TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT IT. GOV. BAKER LET ME START BY SAYING I WAS HONORED TO SEE THE ENVIRONMENTAL LEAGUE OF MASSACHUSETTS, THE BIGGEST AND BROADEST COALITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS, CHOSE TO STAY NEUTRAL IN THIS RACE AFTER HEARING FROM BOTH MY OPPONENT AND ME RECENTLY ADDED FOR HIM THEY HELP. BECAUSE — THE HELD. BECAUSE OF MANY OF THE KEY THINGS WE HAVE BEEN DOING. WE ARE MOVING AGGRESSIVELY AWAY FROM FOSSIL FUELS. WE ARE THE ONES WHO PUT A PROGRAM IN PLACE THAT BASICALLY CHANGED PEOPLE’S INTEREST IN OFFSHORE WIND. WE ARE NOW GOING TO HAVE PEOPLE ALL THE WAY DOWN THE EAST COAST ENGAGING IN THIS IN WAYS THEY DIDN’T PREVIOUSLY. IN ADDITION TO THAT, WE ARE THE ONLY STATE I KNOW OF MAKING BIG INVESTMENTS ALONGSIDE PRIVATE ENTITIES IN STORAGE. STORAGE OVERTIME IS HOW YOU TAKE WIND AND SOLAR AND OTHER INTERMITTENT ENERGY SOURCES AND TURN THEM INTO 24/7 365 OPPORTUNITIES. WE ALSO HAVE A HYDRO PROJECT WHICH WI DELIVER CLEAN HYDRO ENERGY HERE AS WELL. BOB: CARBON TAX, Y OR NAY. GOV. BAKER: I THINK THE WAY TO DO THIS ONE IS TO TRY TO DO THIS THE SAME WAY THE REGGIE PROGRAM WORKS. REGG IS A PROGRAM DONE AMONG THE SIX NEW ENGLAND STATES PLUS SOME OTHER ONES IN THE MID-ATLANTIC AREA, WHERE WE BASICALLY TRAD ON CARBON FOR POWER. IT HAS WORKED REALLY WELL ACROSS ALL THE STATES WHO PARTICIPA AND IT HAS HAD A HUGE IMPACT ON CARBON EMISSIONS AND POWER. WE HAVE BEEN TALKING TO THE OTHER STATES ABOUT PUTTING TOGETHER A REGIONAL APPROACH TO DO WITH TRANSPORTATION. MARIA: LET’S MOVE ON WITH AN ISSUE THAT IMPACTS A LOT OF FAMILIES. ADRIAN: I WANT TO ASK YOU ABOUT OPIOIDS. GOVERNOR BAKER, YOU BOOSTED PENALTIES FOR TRAFFICKING AND CLAMPED DOWN ON OVERPRESCRIBING. HOW HAVE YOU HELD COMPANIES THAT HAVE MISLED CONSTITUENTS ABOUT THEIR ADDICTIVE PROPERTIES ACCOUNTABLE? GOV. BAKER: FIRST O ALL, THIS IS AN ISSUE I RAN FOR GOVERNOR ON — IS NOT AN ISSUE I’M RAN FOR GOVERNOR ON, IT JUST FOUND ME. EVERYWHERE I WENT, EVERYONE HAD HEARTBREAKING STORIES ABOUT THIS EPIDEMIC. AND I AM PROUD OF THE WORK WE HAVE DONE ON THI WE ARE A NATIONAL LEADER ON FINDING THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC HERE IN THE COMMONWEALTH AND HAVE DONE SO ON A BIPARTISAN BASIS. THE BIGGEST AND BEST WAY FOR U TO SUPPORT EFFORTS TO CRACK DOWN ON OPIOID MANUFACTURERS WAS TO WORK WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND TO MAKE SURE SHE HAD ALL THE DATA THAT SHE NEEDE TO CREATE WHAT MOST PEOPLE ARE CALLING THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE, DETAILED, AND SIGNIFICANT LAWSUIT THAT HAS BEEN FILED BY ANY STATE AGAINST PURDUE PHARMA. I AM REALLY PROUD OF THE WORK THAT WE DID IN CONJUNCTION WITH HER OFFICE ON THAT IN A WAS PROUD TO STAND WITH HER AS SHE ANNOUNCED IT. ADRIAN: WHAT WOULD YOU DO? M. GONZALEZ: BUT YOU WANT TO REPLACE HER? I WOULD WORK VERY CLOSELY WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL TO GO AFTER THE FORMER SUIT WHO ARE A HUGE PART OF THIS PROBLEM. THEY WERE MARKETING THESE ADDICTIVE PILLS WITHOUT TELLING PEOPLE THEY WERE ADDICTIVE. THEY SHOULD BE PAYING FOR A LOT OF THE COSTS AND TREATMENT RESOURCES WE NEED TO DEAL WITH THIS CRISIS. AND THIS IS A CRISIS. I APPRECIATE THE FACT THE GOVERNOR HAS MADE THE OPEN YOU WOULD CRISIS A PRIORITY. BUT WE NEED TO BE MUCH MORE AGGRESSIVE AND TAKING IT ON. IN ADDITION TO WORKING WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL COULD GO AFTER FROM SUNOCO COMPANIES, I WOULD EXPAND THE TREATMENT RESOURCES WE HAVE. WE DON’T HAVE NEARLY ENOUGH TO MEET THE DEMAND FOR TREATMENT. I THINK WE NEED TO TRY NEW THINGS LIKE SAFE INJECTION SITES, COVERING MEDICAL MARIJUANA AS ALTERNATIVE PAIN THERAPY TO THESE ADDICTIVE PILLS. I THINK WE NEED TO STOP TREATING PEOPLE WHO ARE ADDICTED BY CRIMINALS. THE GOVERNOR KEEPS SENDING PEOPLE W ARE IN TREATMENT LEFT NOT COMMITTED A CRIME TO A FACILITY WHERE THEY ARE OVERSEEN BY CORRECTIONS OFFICIALS AND NOT GETTING TREATMENT. I WILL SHUT THAT DOWN. ANTHON GENTLEMEN, OVER THE YEARS MASSACHUSETTS HAS PIONEERED A NUMBER OF BIG IDEAS WE ESTABLISHED THE FIRST PUBLIC SCHOOL, THIS WAS THE STATE THAT MA GAY MARRIAGE LEGAL, THE FIRST STATE. IT ESTABLISHED ROMNEY CARE WHICH MORPHED INTO THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT. JAY GONZALEZ WHAT IS THE BIG IDEA THAT WILL DEFINE YOUR GOVERNORSHIP? M. GONZALEZ: THERE ARE MANY. ANTHONY: I AM LOOKING FOR ONE. M. GONZALEZ: I WANT US TO BE THAT MASSACHUSETTS WHERE WE HAVE A GOVERNOR WHO IS BEING AMBITIOUS AND ASPIRATIONAL ABOUT WHAT WE CAN ACCOMPLISH. I HAVE A LOT OF DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF MY AGENDA I THINK WOULD FIT INTO THAT CATEGORY. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT IS TO BE THE FIRST TO GIVE EVE CHILD HIGH-QUALITY ACCESS TO CHILD CARE AND PRESCHOOL THIS IS GAME CHANGING FOR YOUNG KIDS IN TERMS OF THEIR SUCCESS. IT ALLOWS PARENTS TO GO TO WORK TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILIES. WE ARE THE MOST EXPENSIVE STATE IN THE COUNTRY. WHAT I AM PROPOSING AND WHAT I WOULD DO BY THE END OF MY FIRST TERM IS ENSURE EVERY CHILD AND FAMILY FROM ZERO TO AGE FIV BIRTH TO AGE FIVE — NOT JUST PRESCHOOL, WILL HAVE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY AFFORDABLE CHILDCARE AND PRESCHOOL. WE WILL GET THAT DONE. ANTHONY: GOVERNOR BAKER, THE BIG IDEA THAT WOULD DEFINE YOUR SECOND TERM? GOV. BAKER: THE BIGGEST ONE IS THIS CLIMATE CHANGE ISSUE. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF DOING MUNICIPAL REVOLVER BODHI PLANNING EXERCISES WITH ALL 351 CITIES AND TOWNS. THIS IS A NATIONAL PROGRAM WE HAVE PUT TOGETHER. NO ONE ELSE HAS DONE ANYTHING LIKE THIS AND OTHER STATES ARE ADOPTING IT. ONCE IT IS DONE WE WILL DO HAS A MITIGATION PLANNING FOR THOSE COMMUNITIES. ONCE WE HAVE THAT, THAT IS THE BLUEPRINT FOR DOING WITH CLIMATE CHANGE. I THINK IN MANY RESPECTS, THIS HA URGENCY, IT NEEDS TO GET DONE, AND WE ARE SITTING AND NATION FRAMEWORK THAT MANY OTHER STATES ARE GRABBING ONTO AND PURSUING ON THEIR OWN. THAT COMES ON THE HEELS OF CREATING A NATIONAL MODEL FOR HOW TO DO WITH THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC. AS I SAID EARLIER, A NATIONAL, SORT OF, RUSH TO OFFSHORE WIND BECAUSE OF WHAT WE DID IN CREATING THE FIRST AFFORDABLE OFFSHORE WIND PROJECT. M. GONZALEZ THERE IS NOT ANYONE WHO FOLLOWS WHAT IS HAPPENING ON CLIMATE CHANG AND WHAT WE ARE DOING IN THE STATE WITH EXCEPT THE GOVERNOR IS BEING AMBITIOUS ENOUGH ON THIS. OTHER STATES ARE STARTING TO AND WILL BE OUTPACING US IF WE STAY ON HIS SCHEDUL WE NEED TO BE MUCH MORE AGGRESSIVE IN DEVELOPING OFFSHORE WIND AND GETTING RID OF CONSTRAINTS ON SOLAR DEVELOPMENT, WHICH THE GOVERNO PUT IN PLACE, WHICH HAVE REDUCED THE RATE AT WHICH SOLAR IS BEING DEVELOPED AND WE HAVE LOST 3000 JOBS IN THE SOLAR INDUSTRY IN THE LAST YEAR. I WILL BE BOLD ON THIS ISSUE AND MANY. EARLY EDUCATION AN CARE, SINGLE-PAYER HEALTH CARE, A LOT OF ISSUES WHERE WE SHOULD BE A LEADER, AND WE WILL BE WHEN I AM GOVERNOR. GOV. BAKER YOU HAVE MENTIONED THAT $1 BILLION FIVE TIMES SINCE THIS DEBATE STARTED. THREE TIMES AND TRANSPORTATION, JUST AGAIN ON EARLY CHILDHOOD ED. IT IS DISHONEST TO STAND HERE IN FRONT OF THE VOTERS, SAY YOU WILL BE BOLD, THEN TALK ABOUT INITIATIVES THE COST BILLIONS OF DOLLARS THAT YOU DON’T HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY FOR. WHEN I TALKED ABOUT IN THEORY SPECIFIC DETAIL ARE THINGS WE HAVE ALREADY DONE, THINGS WE ARE PLANNING TO DO THAT ARE ALREADY PROGRAMMED IN BUDGETED. I DON’T THINK IT IS FAIR FOR HIM TO TELL THE VOTERS HE CAN DO A, B, AN C, AND NOT HAVE RESOURCES TO DELIVER. M. GONZALEZ SINGLE-PAYER HEALTH CARE WILL SAVE US MONEY IF WE DO IT THOUGHTFULLY. YES, IT IS BEING BOLD. I HAVE A SPECIFIC PLAN TO RAISE THE MONEY WE NEED TO DO THE THINGS I WANT TO DO THAT WILL COST MORE MONEY. WHAT IS NOT BEING HONEST IS YOU KEEP TELLING PEOPLE YOU HAVE A 15 YEAR PLAN TO FIX THE T, Y WHEN YOU HAD TO TELL THE TRUTH TO THE GOVERNMENT YOU SAID YOU COULD NOT DO IT IN 15 YEARS. ARE YOU BEING TRUTHFUL TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OR TRUTHFUL TO THE PEOPLE OF MASSACHUSETTS? GOV. BAKER: THE 2016 AND 2017 PLAN WE GAVE TO THE FED WHICH WAS BASED ON WHAT WE WERE LEFT WITH, SAID 25 YEARS. THE RECENT DATA, BECAUSE WE SPENT SO MUCH MONEY ON OUR REPAIR BACKLOG THIS PAST YEAR AND THE YEAR BEFORE, IS 15 YEARS. WE ARE THE ONES WHO FIT — PUT THE FISCAL MANAGEMENT AND TROLL BOARD IN PLACE WHICH MEETS EVERY WEEK AND GIVES PEOPLE ACCESS TO ALL THE INFORMATION THEY NEED. DATA NO LONGER RELEVANT. IT IS A 15 YEAR PLAN. M. GONZALEZ: JUN 2017,, TWO MONTHS AFTER YOU SAID IT WOULD BE 15 YEARS. AND 15 YEARS IS RIDICULOUS. MARIA: REALLY QUICKLY SPEED RUN QUESTIONS. WE HAVE GONE FROM FIVE AND NOW TO ONE. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOUR OPPONENT. GO. M. GONZALEZ: STATUS QUO GOVERNOR. GOV. BAKER: SMART, AMBITIOUS, AND PUBLIC SERVANT. BO THE HOUR HAS SPED BY. WE NEED TO MOVE TO YOUR CLOSING ARGUMENTS VERY QUICKLY. YOU EACH HAVE 60 SECONDS. A COIN TOSS DECIDED THAT MR. GONZALEZ GOES FIRST. M. GONZALEZ: THANK YOU. I HAVE RUN INTO A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY THINK CHARLIE BAKER IS DOING A GOOD JOB BUT WHEN I ASK THEM WHY THEY THINK SO, THE ANSWER IS NEVER THAT HE IS DOING A GREAT JOB FIXING OUR TRANSPORTATION OR MAKING PROGRESS ON ANOTHER ISSUE. IT IS USUALLY SOMETHING LIKE, HE SEEMS NICE, AND I’M REALLY GLAD HE IS NOT ONE OF THOSE CRAZY RIGHT WING EXTREMISTS. THE MEASURE OF WHETHER OUR GOVERNOR IS DOING A GOOD JOB SHOULD NOT BE THAT HE IS NICE AND IS NOT CRAZY. THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO LOWER OUR EXPECTATIONS. IT IS TIME TO RAISE THEM. I WILL PROVIDE THE BOLD LEADERSHIP WE NEED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR WORKING FAMILIES IN THE STATE AND TO STAND UP AGAINST DONALD TRUMP’S HATEFUL AGENDA. I KNOW I AM THE LITTLE GUY IN THE SELECTION. LITERALLY, AND FIGURATIVELY. I ALSO KNOW THAT LITTLE GUYS OVERWHELM OVERWHELMING ODDS WHEN THEIR CAUSE IS THE AIM HIGH AND WORK HARD AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER ALONG THE WAY. DON’T LET ANYONE TELL YOU THIS ELECTION HAS BEEN DECIDED AND THAT YOUR VOTE DOES NOT MATTER. BOB: THAT IS YOUR 60 SECONDS. M. GONZALEZ: THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I HOPE TO EARN YOUR VOTE ON NOVEMBER 6. GOV. BAKER: FIRST OF ALL WANTED THINK THE CONSORTIUM AGAIN FOR HOSTING THIS DEBATE AND I WANT TO THANK THE AUDIENCE FOR LISTENING. I ALSO WANT TO SAY HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE THE OPPORTUNITY I HAVE HAD OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS TO GET THE PEOPLE — TO GET TO KNOW THE PEOPLE OF MASSACHUSETTS. THE TIME I SPENT TRAVELING THIS COMMONWEALTH, LISTENING TO YOUR THOUGHTS AND CONCERNS IN INCORPORATING THOSE INTO THE WAY WE BUILD POLICY AND GET THINGS DONE, HAS BEEN A TRUE JOY FOR ME. AND I KNOW FOR THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR AS WEL ONE OF THE THINGS WE PLEDGED TO DO WHEN WE TOOK OFFICE IS WE WOULD WORK TOGETHER WITH OUR COLLEAGUES AND LOCAL AND STATE GOVERNMENT TO MOVE THIS COMMONWEALTH FORWARD OUR ECONOMY IS BOOMING, OU SCHOOLS ARE TERRIFIC, BUT THE FINAL THING I WANT TO SAY TONIGHT IS OUR PEOPLE ARE GREAT. AND HOPE YOU GIVE US A CHANCE TO CONTINUE TO WOR ON WHAT WE ARE DOING UNDER ARMOUR SIXTH. — ON NOVEMBER 6. BOB: THANK YOU VERY MUCH. MARIA: EARLY VOTING ENDS TOMORROW, AND ELECTION DAY IS ON TUESDAY. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. GETTING. GOOD EVENING, EVERYBODY.
Gov. Charlie Baker, challenger Jay Gonzalez meet for final debate before midterm elections
Republican Gov. Charlie Baker and his Democratic challenger, Jay Gonzalez, met Thursday for their final pre-election debate.
Baker is running for a second four-year term as the top office-holder in a state where Republicans make up a small fraction of the total voting population.
Gonzalez is hoping to topple Baker, arguing that he hasn't been bold enough in trying to tackle top issues including the state's beleaguered public transportation system.
Baker, who has worked to distance himself from Republican President Donald Trump, has led Gonzalez in fundraising and in polls throughout the campaign.
The debate began with a series of questions related to natural gas, including the disaster in the Merrimack Valley and the National Grid labor lockout.
Baker was working to fend off attacks from Gonzalez even as one politician not on the ballot, President Donald Trump, hovered over the televised clash.
Gonzalez faulted Baker on Thursday for not speaking out forcefully enough against the president, calling Trump’s rhetoric “hateful.”
Baker, who is running for a second two-year term, says he didn’t vote for Trump in 2016 and doesn’t plan to vote for him if he runs for re-election.
Baker said a proposal by Gonzalez to raise $3 billion in extra revenue is tenuous at best and wouldn’t go nearly far enough to pay for all of the Democrat’s proposals.
Gonzalez said $3 billion is better than zero, which he said is Baker’s plan.
Election Day is Tuesday and early voting ends Friday.
