Grade 5 Diabetes Type 1 Dies After Glucose Drop During Pajama Party

NEW CASTLE, Pennsylvania – According to WPXI, friends and family are mourning the death of a nine-year-old Pennsylvania girl who died after a slumber party.

Sophia Daugherty, grade 5, who had type 1 diabetes, suffered a traumatic brain injury after her blood sugar level dropped.

For several days, the doctors worked to save his life. Sophia, whose hypoglycemia had caused swelling of the brain and a brainstem hernia, was declared dead at 3:44 pm. Wednesday, according to the New Castle News.

"It was a popular little girl," said Superintendent Laurel Len Rich. "The most commonly used adjective was sweet, sweet Sophia."

Sophia played basketball and softball for Laurel Elementary School and was also a member of Girl Scouts, according to the newspaper.

According to WPXI, everyone knew Sophia, with about 80 other students. Community and high school counselors work with those who knew her.

"We think it's better for us to be together," Rich told WPXI. It's normal to cry, it's normal to cry, it's normal to feel bad, it's normal not to understand why. But it is better that we all go together and we trust each other.
