A Gold Coast man who convinced his wife to kill himself in order to use his life insurance was sentenced to at least five years of imprisonment at the prison, at the end of an event historical.

Graham Robert Morant, 69, was convicted after being portrayed as a money hungry man, so desperate for his own religious complex that he persuaded his wife to commit suicide.

Once Jennifer Morant made that decision, she then helped her in the couple's home in the Gold Coast hinterland.

Jennifer Morant was suffering from depression and chronic back pain.

But in sentencing Morant on Friday, Supreme Court Justice Peter Davis said his actions had nothing to do with compassion for his wife.

Morant's real goal was to get his life insurance payments worth $ 1.4 million.

"Mrs. Morant was a vulnerable person with physical health problems. She was suffering from depression, "Judge Davis told Morant.

"You took advantage of these vulnerabilities to persuade her to commit suicide, and then you helped her to do it once she made that decision."

The court learned that Morant wanted to use this money to buy a property on which he could build a religious commune, with bunkers to pull out a kidnapping.

Davis J. stated that Morant had shown no remorse for his actions and that his wife had died in a remote location in November 2014.

"You knew full well that upon Morant's death, you would receive a payment of the insurance policies," he said.

"You counseled and helped your wife commit suicide because you wanted to get your hands on $ 1.4 million."

Morant was sentenced to 10 years in prison for counseling his wife to commit suicide and six years for helping her to do so.

He can apply for parole after October 2023.
