The Yankees will open the 2019 season without Didi Gregorius.
Manager Aaron Boone announced Friday that the infielder would undergo surgery on Tommy John after suffering an elbow injury when throwing at Fenway Park in the first game of the AL Division series.
While positional players tend to return from ligament replacement surgery faster than throwers, Gregorius is expected to be absent at least part of next year.
"My expectation is that (Didi) will stay with us for most of the season – it all depends on what will happen in the coming weeks," Boone told reporters at a late-night press conference. season (via NJ.com).
Managing Director Brian Cashman later told reporters that Gregorius should return in "the summer".
While the Yankees may start the year with Gleyber Torres, especially if Gregorius must return quickly, the injury will fuel speculation on Manny Machado or another short-stop landing in the Bronx.
Gregorius went 3-14 to the plate in the Red Sox series, with two of those hits in the deciding match 4.
The 28-year-old started 130 regular season shortstop games, hitting 0.28 / 0.335 / 0.454 with 27 home runs and 86 RBIs.
