Group calls for strengthening Seoul's role in fighting TB in Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – A non-profit group based in the United States called on South Korea to take stronger action to fight the North Korea TB crisis worsened under the increased sanctions imposed by the United States on its program of nuclear weapons and missiles.

Eugene Bell Foundation President Stephen Linton on Friday criticized Seoul's alleged lack of urgency to help humanitarian organizations obtain sanctions exemptions to facilitate the delivery of patient care supplies to North Korea .

According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 107,000 cases of tuberculosis were reported in North Korea in 2017, resulting in nearly 16,000 deaths.

Linton said North Korea's TB control efforts had been seriously undermined by the recent decision by the Geneva-based Global Non-Profit Fund to end its program in the country.
