Readers share weather videos as Typhoon Mangkhut approaches Guam

According to the National Meteorological Service, Typhoon Mangkhut passed directly on Rota Monday afternoon with winds of 100 km / h.

Forecasters have warned that northern Guam is likely to experience the most significant effects of the typhoon, and shelters began to fill up at full capacity on Sunday night.

Five closed shelters

In the early afternoon of Monday, five shelters in seven shelters in the north were completely occupied and emergency officials said that the total capacity of the island was greater than 50%. Nearly half of those accommodated were children.

According to Jonathan Pilarca, director of the Machananao Elementary School Accommodation Center, families come in and out late in the morning, while conditions are safe.

Governor Eddie Calvo, who had urged locals to prepare for the worst as the storm approached, said he was satisfied with shelter participation.

Shops close, airport stops flights

As the storm approached the island, stores and other establishments began to shut down.

Grocery stores began shutting down at 10 am and airport operations were completely stopped at 12:15 pm.

According to Adelup, all morning departures for United Airlines on 11 September have been canceled. Travelers have been invited to contact their airlines for the latest updates.

The Guam Regional Medical City instituted a lockout at 1 pm and the Andersen Air Base closed at 3 pm
