A couple of dramatic photos of George Washington's Smith Center's Jumbotron rocked to the side and relied on the "GW" midfielder logo on social media and set off the alarm Tuesday afternoon.
"It sounds a lot worse than it really was," a GW spokesman told the Washington Post in a phone interview. The maintenance was done on the dashboard, while one of the winches on one side gave way. The picture you saw, this side fell to the ground. We have security policies. No one was under the bulletin board. The only people present in the building at the time were the attendants who were working on the dashboard. There were no injuries.
The US women's basketball team beat Japan 102-87 Monday night at the 5,000-seat Smith Center in an exhibition match prior to the FIBA Women's World Cup. The Washington Mystics of the WNBA played in their playoffs in the second round and semi-finals at the Smith Center, but will host the third and fourth (if necessary) WNBA finals at George Mason's EagleBank Arena because of a calendar conflict.
The next scheduled event at the Smith Center is a George Washington women's volleyball game on Friday. The spokesman said that it is too early to say whether the match will have to be relocated.
"The scene is being evaluated," he said. "We do not know if, if any, damage has been done."
