A new survey of parents' attitudes toward influenza vaccine may explain why some continue to resist influenza vaccine, even though it could put their children at risk.
A nationwide survey of 700 parents by Orlando Health's Arnold Palmer Hospital found that more than half of those polled believed the flu vaccine could be the source of the flu. One-third said that the flu vaccine was not working.
The flu season officially began last week and Florida is already the first state to report the death of a flu child who has not been vaccinated this year. The child was otherwise healthy, according to health officials. More than two thirds of the 183 children who died of influenza last year in the country were also unvaccinated.
"Regardless of the drug or the vaccine, people are going to have some concerns," said Dr. Jean Moorjani, a certified pediatrician at the Arnold Palmer Hospital Board of Orlando, in a statement. According to the health department, influenza activity remains low throughout the state, but is expected to increase in the coming weeks.
